“but what do the gods fear? they fear us rising to their level…”

Information
Name // Conchobar Shattered-Wood
-- Origin of name // From Conchobar mac Nessa, king of Ulster in the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology. In legend, Conchobar coveted Deirdre, the daughter of his royal storyteller, who was prophecized to be so beautiful that kings would wage war over her, only for Deirdre to flee with the warrior Naoise. Enraged, Conchobar tracked down Naoise and Deirdre, leading to the deaths of Naoise and his two brothers. In the end, Conchobar weds Deirdre, but, angered by her coldness towards him, gives her to Éogan mac Durthacht, the murderer of Naoise. As she is taken to him, however, Deirdre leaps from the chariot to her death.

Occupation // Apothecary

Role // Wandering healer

Familiar // Wolf - Sanddrift Fuiran
-- Role of familiar // The breeding of fuirans has run in the Shattered-Wood family for generations, with the beasts serving as guards against smaller dragons, as well as alarming the family when larger intruders encroached on their territory. Conchobar’s current fuiran serves to keep intruders away from his temporary shelters, diligently following behind him as he moves from place to place before his true identity is exposed.

HOUSE SHATTERED-WOOD
Now only a footnote in the dealings of Tangled Wood nobility, house Shattered-Wood once carried great sway in their home territory. Little remains of the history of their founding, but Conchobar knows the truth: They were nature dragons, once. The residual magicks of their founder carried through their bloodline long after his name was scrubbed from their history, and they now show in the body of his descendant, Virtue, who has been bound to water weeds that continue to grow from his body to this day.

Once, Conchobar was an idealist. He had set out from the Behemoth, intending to travel as a healer and help those in need.

What Conchobar would find on his journey was war.

War waged in the name of the Eleven.

Wars where he was forced to pick a side. Wars that burned entire clans to the ground. The elimination of entire cultures. History lost. Lives forsaken. Sacrifices for nothing. Sacrifices for everything.

It was enough to drive a dragon mad.

The young Conchobar still had hope, though. He would take to the Starfall Isles, burying himself in archives on what dragonkind knew of the nature of the Eleven. He had but one plan: Claim their magic for himself, that he might empower his own healing magicks to save those on death's door.

During a brutal war between light and shadow, he showed his face once more, carrying two eggs to the battlefield. Before invoking such powers upon a grown dragon, he intended to carry out experiments - corrupt, he would be told, but he would claim it necessary - upon stolen eggs. When the forces of the Lightweaver and Shadowbinder collided, their energies would rain from the heavens, and through a collection of arcane instruments, Conchobar was able to collect this magic within the eggs.

When they hatched, however, he would realize what he had done. The first to hatch was an imperial, like himself, of the light flight. The second, a skydancer of shadow. When Conchobar attempted to approach the hatchlings, however, the skydancer began to leak ichor from his eyes, and the imperial shuddered with battle-lust at the sight.

By the time she had killed her nestmate, Conchobar had abandoned her entirely.

It would be many years before he encountered her again, now living in her own observatory. This time, however, she was unrecognizable to him, a dragon grown into a fine, dutiful scholar of the light. Deirdre.. Her gentle demeanor captivated him, and during the time he spent in light territory, he began to fall for her.

It was a shame, then, that the skydancer had been alive. Or rather, the Skydancer had returned. To his horror, Conchobar had conquered death, at least in a sense.

Yet he would soon learn that such power came at a terrible cost. The love Deirdre shared with her beloved Naoise was not enough to stop the will of the gods. One day, while working on one of their many projects, Naoise and Deirdre fell from the top of their observatory, both dying on impact with the ground.

And the truth is that Conchobar knew. It was he who had sown the seed of doubt in Deirdre’s mind - if she could not be his, he would leave her miserable. Though the intent had simply been to turn her against Naoise, Conchobar’s suggestion that the shadow flight and Shade were connected began to drive Deirdre mad, until she finally turned upon the one she loved.

And he was a fool. A young, obsessive, vile fool. What he had done could never be undone, and it would weigh upon his back for eternity.

As he grieved over his mistakes, Conchobar came to a final conclusion: The gods themselves were inherently harmful. Deirdre and Naoise would not have been the way they were without their divine power. They would be mortal. Fragile. Easier to break under his claws. There wouldn’t have been war. Conchobar would have left their eggs be. He would have never found his obsession. Everything would have been fine.

From this, he waged a campaign against powerful archmages of all flights, something that prompted the otherwise hidden veilspun dragons to step in. Dazzling his sight when he attempted to settle in the Tangled Wood, the swarm was what finally restrained him, sealing him in a runestone.

And eons later, as the elements began to surge…

The veilspun priestess looked at Virtue with despair in her eyes. The Forum of the Obscured Crescent had gone silent, and a runestone lay at her feet, broken in two and leaking a sickly green glow. Upon it, the crest of House Shattered-Wood was engraved.

“I…I don’t understand. We were always the Shadowbinder’s children.”

“I fear not,” the veilspun sighed, “Long have we observed these woods. My ancestors’ records held the truth. You are descended from a dragon born in the Behemoth, a dragon whose terrible curiosity and grudge towards the divine manifested in such a way that we had to seal him.”

Virtue stepped back.

“But…No, that cannot be. We were never - It is impossible. Surely they had felled him.”

“No…He has long coveted the powers of those beyond him, and the fighting of two of them have brought him to rise again.” The veilspun’s eyes clouded as she looked to the horizon. “I fear it is true. Conchobar has returned. The Eleven help us all.”

a plan...
Comnchobar's current plan is to resume the efforts he put out before being sealed: Collecting archmages of every flight, hoping to sap their power and attain a level of magical might that would allow him to contend with the Eleven. Currently, he is collecting information on where those of such power might be...And how best to cage them.

Unhatched Fire Egg CURRENT TARGET: THE FLAME. // Being a nature dragon, Conchobar is well aware of the risk of fighting fire mages head on. He has, however, found a promising lead that may eliminate the need to do so: A disturbance in the ley lines beneath the Zephyrus Springs, a small resort in Terraclae. Though he has felt nothing in the earth beneath him, Conchobar has started to hear whispers of odd tectonic activity beneath it, seemingly confirming his suspicion that something - or someone - lies deeper underground, and if his studies of the magic nearby indicate anything, it may not necessarily be an earth dragon...

Relationships
ANDRASTE
43793328p.png
“I would think you FAR more a mistake than I.”

How quickly Deirdre forgot. At first, Conchobar had simply wished to seek power through one blessed by the Lightweaver herself. The time spent seeking this, however, brought new desires to him. He coveted not just her knowledge, but Deirdre herself. When she spoke so tenderly of Naoise, his heart had broken. She had madly fallen for someone who she would have no choice but to wage war with.

But Conchobar does not forget. His resentment has been simmering for centuries, trapped within a stone to nurse grudge after grudge, and his grudge towards Naoise and Deirdre has reached a boiling point. Conchobar has given up love, but he has not given up on power. If he cannot have her, then he may have the blessings of her beloved Mother…However he must attain them.
BELENUS
00000000.png
“You will pay for your crimes against my bloodline…”

Already simmering in eons of loathing for the dragon who, in his eyes, stole his greatest love, finding one of his descendants has led Conchobar into research towards a seemingly impossible task: Killing the immortal.

A cornered Andraste, in a bid to escape, used information as her bargaining chip, telling Conchobar where his descendants had settled. Unbeknownst to him then, Belenus had committed the heinous crime of leading one into the Wyrmwound. This dragon, Martine, would seemingly die...Until years later, when the aberrations emerged from the Wyrmwound. Martine has come out unstable at best, so at war with herself that their body will often freeze up as the two heads fight for control.

Horrified to see one of his clan's last members in such a state, Conchobar flew into a rage, with Belenus nearly losing his current life in the battle. It seems that the imperial is one of few things that can truly frighten Belenus, as he's starting to seem a bit more on edge than usual...
CERBERA
59013388p.png
"Ahhh...Would you mind burning your favorite incense again? It is such a lovely smell..."

Having sensed Conchobar's powerful nature magicks, Cerbera believes he could be the key to her own goals. Because of this, she has started to travel with the imperial, functioning as one of his caretakers alongside her lover, Zinc. To his credit, Conchobar is well aware of her ulterior motives. His current physical state, as well as Cerbera's knowledge of poisons and venom aiding in his work, has led him to see this alliance necessary.

Perhaps unfortunately for him, between the gentle scent of incense and the herbal baths and the reverence for the one deity he still holds any love in his heart for, he's started to get attached to the coatl...
ZINC
61737850p.png
"Oh, she of many eyes, tell me more of how the world has changed..."

Compared to her partner, Zinc is much more analytical. With her numerous eyes, Zinc watches the world from many angles, but she always keeps a pair of eyes on Conchobar. During their travels, Conchobar has asked the mirror to teach him of the goings-on with his old flight, including the planting of the First Seed and the search for the Final Infection. Though Zinc claims she doesn't trust him, Cerbera has noted that Zinc lets her guard down around him, to the point that she is able to fall asleep with him watching her back.

Conchobar appreciates Zinc's more levelheaded nature, as well as her ability to view the world from numerous literal and metaphorical angles. In addition, he finds her tales of the nature flight soothing, occasionally falling asleep to them like a hatchling hearing a bedtime story - Something Zinc will never let him live down.
