Biography

PROGENITOR.

Name meaning: Magma
. . . . . . eolbr (magma)
the Clan Annals wrote:
"The clan's founding matriarch... a grizzled Pearlcatcher older than the modern advent of alchemy. She "governs" the clan by total assembly."
  • Malak Cazre, or "Coronal Precinct" in Cazric, is a free city-state in the central Sunbeam Ruins. Previously a district of the clan Telzdregh, its innovation has led it to take charge of and reabsorb its base culture (and as a consequence of Luminax). Despite this, it retains its historic name.
  • It has minor relation to the supposed 'empire' which begat the Imperial/Emperor breeds' names.
Telzdregh came about when the Imperial named Yindda was banished from the Empire to the south lands near the Hewn City. Few other exiles were dwelling there at the time, because the Imperials feared it was a cursed burial ground and they would become Emperors if they died or slept there. The dragon who had to live in these conditions was disliked and had little other places to go, however. He feared to touch the earth and so took up his refuge under the river crossing. A grave keeper, the Pearlcatcher named Brylutges, saw Yindda struggling and befriended him, vowing to protect their soul though he did not know how. Imperials and Pearlcatchers were near-enemies at the time, but Brylutges was privately quite afraid of Emperors, and this stubborn dragon was determined to stay there. He kept a close eye on Yindda and took up residence with him. Even after Yindda eventually conquered his fears and was unafraid to adventure the ruins, their original lair grew to overtake clefts in the surrounding cliffs and ledges.
When other Imperials thrown out by the corrupt court learned of this safe haven, they came seeking asylum too, and it became a point of congress between different Flights. (Its census of Imperials have always outnumbered Pearlcatchers, therefore more of their philosophy is known to us, than that of Pearlcatchers.) To prevent being overburdened by travelers, Brylutges and Yindda adopted a password system in the form of sphinxes, sacred beasts that would give them riddles to pass. They called this new clan Telzdregh or "root alliance", since it was the first alliance to take root in the area. (In modern Cazric this is spelled Talztregc)
Precincts of the clan, including Malak Cazre, developed when Telzdregh became too large and its council (Brylutges, Yindda and a few others) decided it needed to be divided into regions to maintain the same standards of safety for settlement.
  • Malak Cazre was charged to Eolbr directly by Brylutges. It is endowed with much of its authentic Light culture by Telzdregh, but the precinct itself became the origin of customs specifically inspired by Fire migrants. Malak Cazre believes deeply in the power of words and myths. It is inspired by and upholds the ideals of "deviant radiance", or that "even the light which illuminates the truth, also bends in some way".
It is this power of words that Eolbr held important in her heart when shaping the clan of the Coronal Precinct. She, and those who joined the clan proper, understood magic to be derived from words. (Gene scrolls, for instance, work by containing the "word magic" of that species. When read aloud, this works a transformative magic spell.)

Eolbr was not born a Pearlcatcher, but it has been so long since her soul has ever been anything else that she only knows what she chose to be. She has "always been the de facto leader of a historic city-state in the middle of the Sunbeam Ruins" but also knows what the Emberglow Hearth looks like and behaves as though raised by the region. Which is an odd experience for the few clanmates (HER mate, specifically) who saw her lead that previous life and must remind her of her own history.
Recovering pieces of her identity, and still coming to terms with the forgotten legends she forged, she is now a formidable counsel in her own right and has been "brought up" a second time, so to speak, so that she has some interesting mannerisms from both cultures. (She's triangulated that the Choice happened at some point after she came into leadership of Malak Cazre, and before it separated from Telzdregh.) She waged fierce battles to make this clan what it is.

She uses not her shining pearl to make her soul superior, but rather her shining horn to spill blood. She does not show her pearl to anyone, instead transporting it in a sling repurposed from a cannon. Her pride is not in being a Pearlcatcher, it is in the flame she carries-- and she doesn't believe Pearlcatchers are beholden to anything, at any rate.

One must wonder why a Pearlcatcher would be so educated about the plight of Imperials. Why, indeed, does she sympathize and identify with them?
