they had lost one of the magpie's grandchildren for days. search parties had proven fruitless, and his absence had found no explanation. out of the brushwork she came, days later, clutching his trembling frame in thick jaws and weary from battle; the joy of seeing their brother again overcame all caution the clan should have felt, and when she asked for a place to stay, she was granted asylum immediately, without questions asked.

it was only after weeks of communal life that the ridgeback began raising questions. what had happened in Chambray's absence for his constant nightmares to start plaguing him? why had his wounds taken so long to heal? and where did her sudden interest in the clan's iller members come from?

nowadays, she is regarded with caution, and hatchlings are told to stay away from her and her offspring. the hostility of the clan does nothing for the complete devotion his mate offers her, and she seems perfectly content with only him by her side.

she leaves offerings of peace to the matriarch sometimes. carcasses and berries she picks herself, to show goodwill. the matriarch has never touched any of them.

they seem to rot quicker than normal food does.
