Biography
Freyja is the Norse goddess of love, fertility, and battle.
As queen of the Valkyries, she has the right to claim half the souls of the bravest warriors who die in battle. On the battlefield, she comforts the dying and eases their transition to the afterlife. Those that she has chosen, are escorted to her home in Fólkvangr, a beautiful meadow. There the fallen warriors spend their time in perpetual rest and recreation. A sweet and generous woman, she always invites their wives or lovers to come and live with them.
The other half of the heroic warriors, belonging with Odin, are gathered by the other Valkyries and taken to Valhalla where they relive battles each day and feast each night.
Freyja loves all things beautiful and sparkling. Jewelry being her favorite, she has a necklace that was made by four dwarfs. It was made with such artistry that it gleamed like a constellation of stars. The necklace is named Brísingamen, which means "flaming" or "glowing."
Freyja rides a chariot pulled by two cats named Bygul (bee-gold, or honey) and Trjegul (tree-gold, or amber). The kittens were given to her by Thor.
She also keeps the boar, Hildisvíni, by her side.
Freyja possesses a magic cloak of falcon feathers that allows her to shape shift and fly great distances very quickly.
Freyja is married to Óðr. Soon after their wedding, Óðr disappeared and all feared that he was dead, perhaps killed by the other gods for disobeying their orders. Freya was distraught and cried tears of gold, but refused to accept that he was dead. Putting on her magical cloak made of falcon feathers, she flew into the sky and searched all over the earth for him. Óðr had not died, but was lounging beneath a tree, and upon seeing her, he fell in love with her all over. Seeing that he was fickle and she could never fully trust him, she turned him into a sea monster so that no other woman would ever desire him.
She and Óðr are parents to two daughters, Hnoss and Gersemi.
