Biography

Blue Razzberry Beau

Art by GaaaArt by Gaaa

Shortly after the installation of the first telescope in the Morningstar astronomy hall, a bizarre celestial phenomenon came to the astronomers' awareness. Every night, short-lived brush stroke of fractal stars would soar past the observatory in the dead blue darkness, without any true predictable timing or changes to the surrounding stars. Lance and Lyle did their best to discern the cause of this absurd and untraceable stellar marvel, staring down their lenses at the night in hopes of understanding, but returned nothing. Until the night where the phenomenon stared back.

The perimeter of land was guarded fiercely by the legion under Cherry Syrup Chad, so there was no way that a living creature could slink over the snowbanks to take flight over the lair in secret. The only remaining possibility was that this mysterious and glimmering creature came from elsewhere.

This great sapphire splendor indeed came not from the surrounding tundras or crags, but from the writhing black oceans beyond. Grand in power and gorgeous as the shimmering depths, this dragon was feared and revered by the sparse life that populated the icy seas of the South--but for all his glory, he was alone. Lonely and lurking in a churning sea, he came to stave off sadness by creating long interpretive movement routines to express the depths of his feelings. He could not even dream that one day, he might get to share these dances for a crowd of dragons who adored him.

Knowing naught but this seclusion for so long, it was truly astonishing to him when suddenly there came the faint sounds of laughter, the smells of clay baking over gentle fires and of fresh-tapped syrup. Eventually, he gathered the courage to lash his mighty tail on the waves of a storm's preamble, and soar over the land mass, from one side to the other of the frigid sea. Sure enough, when he looked below, he caught the glimpse of the flitting ears of an eager Aberration, saw the makings of a sculptural exhibit, and different-sized Bogsneak foot-treads in the snow. Was it the desperation of loneliness, or something more that moved his blue heart to feel such kinship with these dragons he had never met?

After weeks of sailing cautiously overhead, basking privately in imagined comradery with the clan beneath him, he finally looked for too long-- through the end of the telescope, a wide Aether eye locked on to his own for just a moment, and he knew he'd been spotted. It was a week before he dared return, waiting for the shroud of Icefield sleet to keep him safe from detection. Thus, it was also truly stunning to the Undertide when he looked down to see a sign upon the observatory roof, clearly painted in two different wavy cursive hands:

Welcome, beast of the night! Come, and be despondent no more. Do you like hot cocoa?

When he crashed into the other side of the sea, his heart was pounding. Could someone who'd known nothing but the empty ocean truly find a home among dragonkind? What was cocoa? As though to answer his racing thoughts, he felt a rush of faith and confidence flow through his veins, like something from that clan, barely perceptible through the icy haze, had entered his soul and reignited long-frozen hopes.

The next night, he leapt from the bounding waves, this time setting his course to land in a rough slide across the icy expanse before the lair gates. From the doors beyond, he saw two fuzzy dragons stumbling across the entryway, their bright circuits and filigrees standing out in the dull azure of the hazy night.

It's him!! Dal, it's him! Let him in!

Dal, as it turned out, was the Aberration, eyes gleaming with protective flecks of flame. He smiled largely and tilted his head, opening the gate and bowing him forward to greet the two out-of-breath Aethers who had come to greet him. Lyle and Lance were delighted to meet the Undertide, and despite the shock of their cheerful curiosity to Beau's sullen quiet mind, they spoke of such poetic joy when describing their pursuit of knowing him. All of that work-- just to know him. In turn, he began to share his many years of tales, from battles in seas long-dried, to his discovery of the clan-- he even dared open up about his recent work in hauntingly lonesome performing arts. Something was so freeing about sharing little parts of himself, he could not hold back.

They welcomed him inside, where many Morningstar dragons were gathering for a casual performance night. He was offered a bowl of cocoa while he shared the company of so many new friends, and he lapped at many bowlfuls of the warm beverage with keen joy as he watched the other performers. Grape Soda Gunther, who had chuckled refilling his cocoa for the fourth time, offered to step in and ask if there was time for him to have a turn on stage. The Undertide's eyes glistened, and emboldened by the warmth of new-found comradery and hot chocolate, he nodded.

He slithered onto the grand hall stage, and let the emotion flow through his blood, the performer's grace and the rush of Morningstar he'd felt in the waters after his final fly-over guiding his muscles as the music began. His moves were sleek, his grace astounding for his large size. The other dragons were brought to tears by the haunting swoosh of wings and coils of tail, feeling in their gut the loneliness of years in a cold sea, the freshness and warmth of new-found home. When at last the final note buzzed out, the audience burst into applause and supportive calls, and all at once, Beau knew he had found his home.

Their scales, their hearts-- they are like mine. They too, love the cold expanse of forever-night, and shine in creative fervor under the undisturbed skies.

Blue Razzberry Beau has now settled into his role as the Morningstar clan lifeguard, heading multiple new swim sport and water activity lesson programs. Baffled to hear that many of his shiny and talented bretheren had never set foot in deep waters, or learned the joy of water aerobics, he joyfully helps his landlocked new friends to overcome their fears and enjoy their surroundings. Dalmation has been especially enthusiastic with helping move these projects forward, heating the tundra pools and ocean banks for the more hesitant dragons hailing from warmer climes.
