”The bitterness in life can be forgotten when your wings taste the sweetness of the night.“ Shadow left home at a very young age her name was simple enough and others have smirked at it’s lack of originality but she never saw the need to take any loftier name she owes her happiness to the Shadowbinder and her name is a reflection of that. Similarly she has always thought herself as a mother to every member of her clan though she could call herself their queen and none would dispute it. Her attitude altered with age, in her youth she spurned the advances of a male who eagerly followed her declaring his love, it was only when he left to fight for the Shadowbinder that she learned to appreciate him. As she grew she realized she wanted to settle down and open her home to others but she couldn’t manage alone, she met a handsome skydancer named Darkrogue and the two encouraged others to join them. Shadow enjoyed playing in the night sky becoming a proficient flyer and then excelling in aerial dancing and stunts that excited her clan mates. Soon she was helping them learn and in turn learning from them until they made a ritual and habit of their nightly performances. Maturity came with hatchlings and Shadow decided that her clan would be called Noche Dulce, in honor of the sweetness of the night, and only skydancers would be permitted to remain permanently among them. Shadow retained Darkrogue as her close friend and confidante, but the two realized they were no love match and never demanded more from one another. In time Shadow took in other skydancers valuing each one for their capabilities and encouraging learning and frivolity in equal measure. Her personality was calm and some would say aloof but she was ever attentive. One cruel winter on the coldest and shortest day Shadow came across a small clutch of eggs and decided to take them in lest they perish. The eggs turned out to be nocturne eggs and at first Shadow planned to send them away once they had grown, but remarkably the Nocturnes showed such impressive mimicry skills that they joined the skydancers seamlessly. Shadow permitted them to stay since they were the Shadowbinders chosen and since they behaved and flew as gloriously as any skydancer. The clan enjoyed sleeping the day away and waking as the sun set to limber themselves and then practice new aerial routines. In the night they hunted and collected food, studied, trained, and enjoyed spirited conversation. Shadow was proud of her small clan, she relished battle training with Nightfrost, listening to UltraNova’s musical lessons, receiving reports from Nightspy, debating with Calcium, studying language with Amalaric and his lovely mate Le Bel Inconnu, and reminiscing about their humble beginnings with Darkrogue. Yet the small secluded nature of the clan could not last forever, and one night a bedraggled lemon skydancer tremblingly begged Shadow for shelter… The Royal Court Commences… |
