- arcane magic is hard to work with and the magic contaminate in the air made it worse, leaving the scholars simmering as they tried to replicate lady liutra's success

- moved by his elders to a bluespine colony upon a seastack bastion, where he was supposed to monitor the residents for void tainting
- this particular colony was trying to breed patchstitch lines into the bluespines, since a life subelemental patchstitch would be soooooo much easier to collect life magic from

- he didnt get along well with the other scholars at the observatory, mainly because the void magic was making him bad weird
- him getting moved to the colony was a punishment
- it's a lot of tedium and petty drama, and a lot of repetitive work measuring and labeling samples & maintaining the wards

- he rapidly grew disillusioned with the observatory
- befriended viscapre, a failed attempt at breeding life magic into patchstitch lines who was being used as a maid
