Short Fiction
“I think it’s time I go.”
The setting sun bathed the cliff-face in an orange light. A young Imperial sat under a marble arch overlooking the flowery plains below. As he rolled a vial between his talons, he stole a glance at the dragon curled up across the span of the arch.
“Is this really what you want?” she mumbled, her gaze affixed on the small clusters of lodgings in the valley below.
“Well,” he replied, “what greater duty is there to dedicating your life as witness to our history?” He nodded slowly. “That’s my role to play in Her pursuit of truth, I think. I would be a… a living time capsule. The knowledge I would hold, infallible.” The vial burbled as he flipped it upright to peer inside, but there was nothing within the golden liquid he hadn’t seen the last dozen times.
He looked back at the shrine of freshly carved marble assembled the day prior, and he gestured to the small pillar nestled in the middle. “And that’s where I’ll be stood, right where we used to play amidst the light bugs. I’ll watch you and my brothers grow up, and I’ll see how big our town in the valley gets. I may see war. Even when you die, the world will move on and grow.” He paused. “But before that happens, I do hope you come visit me every once in a while.”
His companion propped herself up on her wings and chuffed. “And what’s your point? That it’s worthwhile turning yourself to stone for some idol who you don’t even know? We all see that Lightweaver hasn’t been in communion with our people recently. They’re worried that She’s—.”
“Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for that fearmongering crap,” he snapped. “Lightweaver is as faithful to us as we are to her, and what I’m doing is greater than me or you or any of our families. I’m sorry you can’t see that.”
“And I’m sorry you’ve convinced yourself you would rather live watching the world you knew rot and die than share in life with it now. Whatever,” her voice began to shake as she heaved herself to her feet. “I just pray you’ll find happiness in the burden you will have to carry. In time, we will all forgive ourselves.”
The Imperial shook her wings open and leaped from the cliff edge. Her wiry form grew small as she flew to their hometown alone. She never looked back.
The young dragon’s heart ached, knowing so many of their dreams would be left behind here. There was nothing more to do or say. At last, he opened the vial and drank the poison inside.

When he awoke, Tet pried his locked jaws open to shriek the words he so desperately wanted to say. The home he overlooked for centuries had become a desecrated no-man’s land.
“My Light, you lied to me!”

About
■ ■ ■
Tet, formerly a jade statue, has been reanimated in the modern age. His disposition still takes after an inanimate object: steadfast, silent, and forever watchful, with a presence that brings others a comfort not well understood. His tendencies to be rather meek around others but still generally approachable made him fit to serve in the position of representative of Tsunraya Hideaway. After all, he had many ages to perfect the art of "sit still, look pretty."

These days, much of the upkeep of the clan's gardens has been taken up by Tet's life partner, Lim, while the day-to-day leadership is managed by ___. The Imperial holds strong feelings for the lands now under surveillance by the Hideaway, so he has no plans to leave it behind. While many know of the circumstances of his awakening and previous position as a member of the Stonewatch Historians, he refuses to speak of what he witnessed in those long-forgotten years, when Imperials were still loved by the Lightweaver.
You will seldom find Tet away from his post atop the crooked marble pillar in the gardens, the place he once rested for a very long time. Day after day, Tet surveys the wake, looking for someone he lost... or perhaps something to give him hope amidst the misery that grips his mind.
