LUCIFER
THE FINAL CALAMITY
_________________________________________________________________

When a world's "energy" or lifeforce exceeds the limit, the frequency of natural disasters increase. When the energy of a world drops below the minimum required to function, the environment and ecosystem will perish and turn to ashes.

Proclaimed "dragon gods", world dragons are an extremely rare species that originate from an imbalance in a world. When a world has too much energy, it condenses it into the form of an egg. The purpose of the egg is to stabilize the world by consuming and absorbing the abundant energy for itself. As most worlds balance quickly with the help of the egg, the egg soon dies and withers on its own.

However, in very rare cases, if a world does not stabilize even with help, the egg will continue to consume a larger and larger amount of energy, speeding up the hatching process.

When world dragons hatch, their purpose is the same as the egg. Considering the amount of energy required to even hatch, world dragons consume a larger amount of energy at once in a bid to calm the world.

Lucifer's world suffered from excess energy. The native organisms suffered disasters from tsunamis to super volcanoes one after another. In an effort to fix everything, Lucifer's egg formed. However, his egg hardly affected anything at all. The only result was a slight dip in energy levels, but it was far from enough. With such overflowing energy, it was only a matter of time before Lucifer hatched from the egg.

When Lucifer's egg cracked open, splintered pieces flew to separate areas of the world, absorbing in rich life for the hatchling. The pieces could not control the rate of absorption and so an immediate three quarters of the world's energy was drained. The ground around those pieces cracked and turned gray, leaving only skeletons of fauna and animals unlucky enough to be in the epicenter. With such a sudden shift from one extreme to the other, the world finally had enough. Unable to sustain itself with only 25% of its original lifeforce, the other half quickly followed suit as death spread from one area to the next. In only a few years, the planet was reduced to a shell of itself. It seemed almost inconceivable that it used to be such a lively planet.

After suffering for centuries on end, the world had died to its final calamity.

Lucifer had no name, no sense of identity ever since he hatched. A concept non-existent to a world with nothing but him.

It had been lonely. His understanding of the dead world that housed him was severely limited. The innate knowledge of his species did not provide a reason for why he had hatched in such a desolate world. After all, world dragons were balancers and certainly not devourers.

It took a few decades before Lucifer accepted the fact that he was the main cause for the death of his home. Guilt was the first emotion he learned.

As more years passed by, it all faded into nothing. Memories of this particular time were all muddled and dry, just like the sky and the ground. Eerie silence was his only companion. Sleep was the only way to pass the time. A flame flickered in him, a wish kept locked up as he slept: If an upper being exists, then I wish the next time I wake up, I will no longer be alone.

Perhaps something did exist up there, or it had all been a coincidence. For when Lucifer woke up from his deep sleep, his eyes opened to two beings curiously poking at him.

They were unlike him. Not dragons, not perceivable organisms, but spheres of light. They shared their warmth and an unusual friendship. For the first time in his life, Lucifer believed that miracles did exist.

It was something so striking, something so different from the monotonous years behind him. New memories formed with these two beings, and Lucifer thought he could almost remember the sight of color from his early years.

It was only with them that a stirring in his mind, a faint trace of desire locked up in his subconsciousness awoke:

I never want to let go.
