Viola's past is storied and strange, like much of her clan's. Born into the plague flight, she was raised primarily in the Tangled Wood, amongst a cult of imperials who devoted themselves to the Shadowbinder in an act of protest against the Lightweaver.

She met Caniphora on a mission to spy on a nearby group of imperials, who had caught the cult's attention since their relocation closer to the Tangled Wood. She was taken by their new matriarch's kindness towards her once she was discovered, and her willingness to take her in rather than sending her back to report her failure. Instead of returning to face certain exile or death, Viola chose to stay with Clan Julianus, and stayed by Caniphora's side.
