at the edge of a great cliff overlooking an endless ocean, a dragon spreads her wings. the moon-pale feathers fluttering from the joints ripple in the faint breeze, reflecting the stars above. all banescales have a restlessness to them in this modern era, the instinct to craft itching under their scales, but this banescale seems particularly unsettled. she peers into the darkness beyond the cliff worriedly, squinting like it will help her see through the haze of night. what is she looking for?

there's a faint noise behind her, and a second presence joins the banescale on the cliff's edge.
"still trying to see into the depths of the ocean?" it's a dark-furred gaoler with eyes the same red as the banescale's, a casual air to her movements as she sits beside the other.
"what else is there to do?" the banescale replies bitterly, shaking her head. the spines along her back clatter together.
the gaoler rolls her eyes. "oh, i don't know, apteria. maybe actually cross the border? enter the sea? flotsam town is right over there. i bet whatever you'd find there would be more useful to you than just sitting here and staring at nothing."
apteria snarls. "are you serious? azaheth, you want me to enter the sea of a thousand currents? while all this... everything... is going on?! are you insane?" she breaks off into a bout of violent coughing.
azaheth is completely unphased by the banescale's anger. "you have that-" here, she nods at a string of pearls and bones tied to one of apteria's legs "-after all, shouldn't that mean that you're protected from whatever evil curse of treason you have on you?"
"not nearly enough," replies her friend, still angry but no longer hissing. "gah, this must seem so stupid to you, right? mysterious old gaoler, been all over the world, no big deal if you incur the wrath of a god because your entire kind is blessed by the icewarden, oh, you're so smart and successful -"
azaheth squints. "stop pacing, dude. and - icewarden's blessing? i was born in plague. just like you."
"more's the pity," apteria grumbles with a cough. she paces for a few steps more, and then suddenly stops and flings her wings up in exasperation. "gods! it's just! so irritating!"
"what are you looking for, again?" azaheth inquires, tilting her head to the side. a wink of red flashes from her teeth for a second, illuminated by the moon.
"it's- it's like this old artifact," apteria replies. "ugh. all this over a damned artifact! it's just because i - eugh, it's like - it-"
"something to do with your order of warriors, isn't it?"
"...yeah. that. except it's especially important because i'm the only one left of my order of warriors. the last of my kind. and it's this artifact that's needed to fix that." she lets out a raspy cough, followed by a wheeze.
azaheth grimaces. "wow, you've really got your work cut out for you. shame you got into trouble with the tidelord for - what was it? destroying... an artifact?"
apteria snaps at her half-heartedly. "yeah, yeah, whatever. and no, it wasn't the tidelord. he's not around anymore, you know." she goes back to staring into the sea beyond the cliff, restless movements interrupted by fits of coughing, and azaheth sighs in exasperation.

ah, it's a sea of a thousand currents, and a sea of a thousand gods. so easy to incur the wrath of one, especially by accident.
