Dumorne
_______Dumorne heard about Wind Flight's Story and Poetry Contest at this year's Mistral Jamboree and decided to enter the poem that came to him as he shelved books in Harbor Haven's Sunken Library, and as he sorted inventory, and as he removed the octopus from under the checkout desk. When he reached the Story and Poetry Contest Pavillion, books were flying everywhere. With their own wings. Dumorne ducked and batted off the fluttering volumes, large and small, of all colors, horrified to see such chaos of books. The other writers gathered around seemed just as perplexed. How do you catch a book that the rules say must be used for their entry?

_______Three dragons stood behind a table with a banner that read "Judges Table, Turn in Entries Here". Some winged tomes were now trapped in tall cages like some dragons kept their prized birds and familiars, set on the grass on each end of the table. These cages had scrolls taped up labeled "Poetry Entries" on one and "Story Entries" on the other. _______One judge, a Mirror dragon, waved their arms and yelled out, "Attention everyone! For those that have not heard, there is a...hitch in our entry process this year. If you could find and catch one of the winged books to write your entry in, that would be perfect. Larger books for stories and smaller volumes for poetry. Be sure to note what category your entry is for and then place it in the appropriate cage." _______Another judge, a Tundra who looked very familiar, tried to say something but became involved in trying to fend off a rather pesky small book. The third judge, a Skydancer dragon, faced their own predicament when a rather large book fluttered purple wings in their face as a small fae requested assistance getting it, their entry, into the story cage. It was obvious that the entry book was calmer than the others flying around the tent, though they still fluttered their wings and tried to break free. _______Dumorne knew the poem he wanted to write and looked around for the category listings, found posted to the right of the tent entrance. He also noticed a Wind Flight dragon standing there, along with others spaced around the tent, assisting in the capture of the winged entry books for those who wished to enter the contest. _______Looking at the categories, Dumorne decided that his poem fit in the Windy Words category. He approached a Windy dragon helping fellow contestants, and after describing what size he needed, they were able to corner the perfect volume with beautiful shiny wings. Dumorne took the book carefully and set themselves up at the tables to the side where other dragons sat writing on the pages of books with all sorts of different fluttering wings. _______The dragon next to him glanced up with a shy smile. "Isn't this exciting? I've never had so much fun writing a poem! With such wings for inspiration, I hope the judges like it! That Tundra up there is Windruffles, and she's known everywhere for her wonderful poems. I hope I can impress her!" _______Dumorne grinned back. "I knew I recognized her from somewhere! What about the other judges?" _______"Oh that first Mirror on the left is Kilkenny! I believe they are an editor from the south. Just think of all the wonderful writers they have helped over the years! And the Skydancer on the right is Arc, a storytelling traveler from far off who is wonderful with words, and loves to play. They'll be at the bonfire again tonight to tell more stories, you should be sure to come!" _______"I guess we better do our best so we can impress them and win the prizes!" Dumorne thought through their idea and then opened the book, smoothing aside the wings, and got to work. The book could be sealed nicely and placed on a shelf in the Sunken Library, The winning book. |
