Bulariko’s life had a rough start. Her mother had gone to serve the Earthshaker early on, but her father stayed behind. From what she remembered, he was constantly moving around and stressing about his growing to-do list. He loved his children—that she could see—but his work was often distracting, and he couldn't keep an eye on them all the time.

Bulariko was a curious young fledgling. She remembers the day when she'd wandered beyond the clan to explore (something she freely did when the others weren't watching), when she saw more shadows crossing the ground than normal. She remembered initially brushing off the sight and continuing until she noticed the sun being smothered and the darkness slowly creeping into the area like a fog. Before she could turn to run back to the clan, black claws had snatched her. Her cries blew away in the wind, too far away from the clan for anyone to hear. Past that, it was like her memory shattered, and all Bulariko has now are pieces.

She drifted in and out. At some point, she woke up to growls and screeches all around her. Starving, she was too frail to have much of a reaction, even when she was picked up by unfamiliar arms and hoisted onto an unfamiliar back.

Her first clear memory, then, was when she opened her eyes to the gazes of a Nocturne and a Coatl. They had asked her questions about who she was and where she came from. She only gave a couple answers. She remembered her old clan, but not her name. In return, they gave her their names—the Nocturne introduced himself as Chilipepper, and the Coatl’s name was Evelyn. They explained that Bulariko was in the Oovalia clan, a Shadow clan, and that they had found her in an unnamed ruins that had been infested by the Shade.

For a month, she stayed where she was. Evelyn healed her and made sure that she didn't have any other wounds or infections, and Chilipepper checked on her whenever he could. At some point, he even introduced her to his mate, Hyacinthe. Hyacinthe worked most of the time, but she also checked in with her when she took a break.

By the time Bulariko grew into an adult, she had fully recovered and was focused on thinking about what she wanted to do. She initially wanted to become a warrior for the Oovalia clan, but she scrapped that idea when she realized she wasn't much of a fighter. Instead, she decided to study medicine so she can help injured and sick dragons, just like Evelyn did for her.
