Winnow
"quote here"

There’s no denying that Winnow’s a Spiral: This dragoness is inexhaustible! She channels her seemingly boundless energy into her work, digging with an enthusiasm that even Ridgebacks struggle to match.

Dragons who’ve worked with her have plenty of good things to say about her. She’s cheerful, optimistic, hardworking...perhaps a little too hardworking. Winnow genuinely enjoys digging, and when she gets started, it’s difficult to break her concentration. She’s been known to suddenly collapse, woozy from lack of rest.

“Sorry,” she says, grinning sheepishly. “I was just having too much fun, I guess.”

More cautious dragons may refrain from hiring Winnow, but there are still plenty who appreciate her energy and focus. Surveying, construction, mining...If a job involves digging, she’ll most likely accept it.

Archaeology is no exception. It’s thrilling to dig up items that other dragons can appreciate—and if she’s allowed to take some of these home, even better! The shelves of her den are crowded with clutter, much of it given to her by grateful archaeologists. Occasionally, Winnow cleans off some of the items and considers what to do with them.

That was how she met Lacuna. The appraiser had a bad reputation even then: She was said to be deceptive and unpleasant to talk to. But Winnow didn’t mind. Her work frequently put her in arduous situations, and she didn’t think a sharp-tongued shop owner would be worse than those. So she wrapped up the item, and off she went.

She no longer even remembers what item it was. Doesn’t even recall the price she was quoted for it.

What she does remember is Lacuna swirling out from one of the back rooms, the shine of her scarlet eyes. Her manner, indeed, brusque and waspish at first. Winnow shrugged it off; she’d had supervisors who were ruder than that. She talked about how she’d found the item, how carefully she’d worked to pry it loose from the earth. Shared what little she knew of it, what else she wanted to learn.

Lacuna’s demeanor softened. She answered more civilly, even warmly—and after a couple more hours, they were chatting like old friends. Winnow learned everything she wanted to about the item, but soon she found another one, and she had another reason to visit the shop. And another, and another...

Till there were no items required; it was enough for her simply to show up at Lacuna’s door. Once the other Spiral closed up shop for the day, they would flutter away together, tails loosely intertwined.

Things haven’t changed much since then. Winnow still travels far away on her digging trips, still excavates items as enthusiastically as before. But perhaps she works with a little more care now. Each item reminds her of her beloved waiting at home. Each one represents another meeting to look forward to.

Lacuna usually just sells these off, but Winnow doesn’t mind. Really, they’re just objects. She doesn’t need any other treasures—she already has one, after all.
