Speaker of Wealth

Gold and wealth can change the world
when it falls equally like rain.

blankblank Hemera sighed and threw the papers onto the desk. “I really don’t know what you expect me to do with this, Koa.”

The green and blue skydancer merely shuffled their feathers. “It is what I have to give you, Hemera.”[ He mirrored her sentence, but his tone was indifferent to her agitation. “I am sure you will be able to work with it.” The papers lay scattered on the table between them, a request for a grand gift to be assembled and delivered to a small Water clan living in the cliff-born river between Fire’s Magma Sanctum and the outskirts of the Zephyr Steppes.

“Yes,” Hemera replied, feeling a headache coming on, “but not without selling half the palace to achieve it. Is there no reason we can’t delay this? I know Aelius-”

“The Imperator is certain it is worth the cost.”

“The Imperator doesn’t make it rain treasure,” Hemera snapped back. She stood, feeling the urge to pace. She didn’t need to see Koa’s face to know he was smiling when next he spoke.

“If your countless adoring devotees could see you in this state, I think the world would fall apart.”

“Oh, my ‘devotees,’ is it?” Hemera replied, amused despite the rising stress. “I don’t think the people I work with would appreciate the name.”

“Then they should stop clinging to your said like moths.” Koa tilted their head. “Although, I suppose it is always interesting to witness you work your magic over them.” There was a moment of silence, then Koa added in a gentler tone. “It is a lot of work, Hemera. It always is. But you and I both know Aelius only asks of it because he is certain you are more than capable of making it work.”

Pulling funding out of thin air, convincing strange dragons to enter meetings with their clan, and weaving bonds between strangers. Nothing Hemera hadn’t done before, it was true, but it wasn’t any less daunting to be put up to such a task as this.

“Yes, fine,” she sighed. “I assume you, as always, have boundless knowledge on the clan we are attempting to cajole this alliance with?”

“Of course,” Koa practically purred, ruffling their wings. “They have a very interesting subreligion, did you know? Something to do with minor river spirits born from the Tidelord’s blood or some such thing.”

Hemera made a face, which of course Koa couldn’t see, but they’d know each other for years and he knew the shape of the silence she left him with. Grinning, Koa waved a claw around. “Oh, come now. That old fish has been missing for ages now, it only stands to reason dragons will make up something new to worship in his place.”

“You’re lucky Evangelos isn’t here to hear that,” was all Hemera replied with. She looked once more towards the papers, feeling that old familiar flicker of nerves deep in her gut. Hemera had worked hard to erase that emotion, that ugly uncertainty in her ability. Yes, she was in her position because she was able to successfully charm her way into any outside nation’s coffers, but that did not mean she would be able to do it again. Each time a new task was before her, self doubt would always rear its ugly head. That she would fail, that she would offend them, that something somehow would go wrong and disgrace her kingdom. Hemera did indeed drape herself in wealth and finery to impress, but it was armor to her. If she was lit with enough colour, they could not peer past and see the pretense of charm.

Hemera shook her head to clear it, and Koa made a small sad smile at the familiar gesture of hers. No matter how Hemera tried to diminish the anxiety reactions that escaped, Koa somehow always was able to sense it. “Okay,” she said, gathering the papers together. “Bring me what you can of that, then. I will see about preparing for this, and perhaps we can ask Evangelos who we can spare from the clan to send to deliver it.”

“We have plenty of time,” Koa assured. “When it is done and they are pleased, as they always are, Aelius will smile upon your work with gratitude. As we all do.”

Hemera sighed and tried to convince herself that that would be enough to influence her traitorous brain away from self-sabotage.
