Biography

Junior Assistant Commander Stardust

KfEHNzV.png

JRcy0fR.png The smallest and most ambitious member of the research team. Due to a mix up surrounding paperwork, Junior Assistant Commander Stardust is the highest ranking member and de-facto leader. However, his family/coworkers respect his method of leadership, because for the most part, he just agrees to do whatever they want to. After all, science can't get done if we are all bogged down in minor things like safety concerns!

This is Junior Assistant Commander Stardust reporting in. Communications are down, and my family is stranded in the Sourglade with no way out. When the Astrolab crash landed, my siblings and I were sent to the Scarred Wasteland to study the life forms here. I thought it sounded fun. I may be the youngest, but through a paperwork mix up and confusion around what ranks are actually supposed to mean, I have been put in charge of our research team. I think I make a great leader. My wings are the sparkliest, and so is my brain.

We found an abandoned lab and quickly moved in, taking advantage of the equipment left behind by the old tenants. There are lots of tubes that... I’m not sure what they do, but Lance Corporal Fitzgerald Fizzlewizz assures me they are definitely important. I should have faith in my team, and my big brother Fizzy. But something about this place feels... off.

I was excited to see the stars from the ground.

This is probably still a good idea.

JAC Stardust here. Nothing is wrong.

There has been a... slight change of plans. It turns out the lab wasn’t abandoned after all.

We aren’t sure what it is. We can hear it creeping around the halls, claws clicking against the metal floors. It breathes too loud, and knows the passcode for all the doors. Moonie was so sure nobody would ever guess 12345. Anyway, we pushed something heavy up against the door, and now the crew is huddled up, trying to figure out a plan. Fifteen can conjure some plants to block the halls, but all that grows here are spindly, thorny vines, and moss that covers everything with a greasy film. Fizzy is too busy using the tubes to carbonate stuff to help us. Moonie is looking for a self-destruct button.

I think I will try to talk to it.

It's ya boy Dusty again. So, basically, there’s good news and bad news.

The good news is, I made a new friend! Based on the diagrams Fifteen drew for me, I think she’s a Coatl. Her body is stout, with short limbs, a long tail, and segmented diaphanous wings. We Aethers are often compared to insects by this planet’s inhabitants, but I think this dragon looks an awful lot like us. Her body is black and shiny with patches of fur, and she has glowing blue spikes like an Aether born with a stinger. They’re warm, and seem to have something electric inside of them. Maybe Coatls have bio-electricity, like eels? I’m not a doctor or a professor like Fifteen is so I’m not sure.

The bad news is that we are running out of food and water. They don’t have a vending machine in here or anything. Fizzy ate the dragon breed drawings, so Fifteen is mad at him now. I asked the Coatl what she eats, but I don’t know if she can understand my advanced space-language.

She just walked away, so I’m following her now. The lab is a lot bigger than I thought. There’s all sorts of metal hallways that branch out into different wings, and then there’s big holes torn into them that lead to tunnels dug into the ground. Since we are on the border of the Wasteland and the Tangled Wood, the earth is very wet and claylike. There isn’t really hard stone, just soft, squishy dirt. You can see huge claw marks gouged into the clay from whatever dragons dug the hole. They must be far bigger than Aether or Coatls. I wonder why the scientists felt like they needed to expand the lab? I can barely remember where we’re going already.

Hello science peeps, its Dusty and Prototype. When I asked the Coatl her name, she pointed to a sign on the wall that said “Prototype Ward” so that must be her room. Since we don’t know her title, we gave her a new one. Junior Junior Assistant Science Officer. I think. Something like that.

She can’t talk, so the team is hard at work building a translator for her. At least, that’s what we think is going on, since when you ask her questions she makes this weird gurgling sound in the back of her throat. Maybe this is the Coatl language I’ve heard about? I offered to let her type on the computer, like I’m doing right now, but she shook her head and backed away super fast. It’s the best method for Aether to collect our data, since hard drives don’t taste very good.

The science is going great. We are discovering so many things. Fifteen tried eating some of the vines since plants are “the ancestors of paper,” whatever that means. Moonie couldn’t find a self-destruct button, so she’s making one. She said not to worry, she will make several other giant red buttons too, since no Aether can resist them, and we can press all of those to our heart’s content. The only water we could find was brown and slimy, but Fizzy has red eyes so he can drink it. He said it tastes fine, and we are all just scared of “water with pulp.” I’m gonna wait until he’s done with this batch of seltzer, because I don’t like pulp and he said he would make it strawberry. My siblings are so smart.

For my mission, I’m trying to learn more about Prototype and what the scientists were doing here. Maybe they just got bored and left all their experiments halfway through, that’s totally understandable. This place is just so empty. At night I swear I can hear breathing on the other side of the wall, even though Prototype is sleeping next to us now. I’m also trying to think of a good nickname. Maybe Tippy? Anyway, that’s all for now.

JAC Stardust and JJASO Prototype again. We are under attack.

Haha, just kidding. Leftenant Rightenant came back from his scouting mission, and reported some unusual observations that he wants me to write down. I love him, but he cares too much about protecting all of us when nothing bad has ever happened.

So, the first thing is that Lefty thought he saw some dragons, but when he went to investigate they weren’t really dragons at all. They had cameras instead of heads, and spindly metal struts for legs. He thinks someone is observing the lab to see what we do, but I don’t see what the problem is. The whole world will have its eyes on us once we make our big discovery! One of them spotted him, and skittered away before Lefty could catch it. But he said that if you go outside, there’s lots of colored wires that go for miles in any direction, and we should follow them.

I don’t really like it outside. The border has a few pine trees that tried to germinate outside of Shadow territory, but being in Plague they wither and slump over like they’re melting in the heat. It’s not hot though, it's kind of cold and misty. And the pine needles that coat the ground disintegrate really fast, leaving this mushy, muddy forest floor. Plus there’s that moss that covers everything, and mold that attacks any food you leave out for more than a minute. Prototype says that’s a good thing, because you can cultivate and eat the mold and get more nutrients that way, but I don’t like eating things that are the color blue is all.

Oh yeah, we made something for her. It’s a keyboard that when you press the buttons, it says words out loud. The layout is kind of bad because Moonie just put whatever words she could think of in that order, but that’s okay. Tippy really seems to like it. She’s constantly touching it and looking over all the buttons.

Okay okay, back to the report. Lefty also says he found a weird dragon nest, different from the kind Aethers make. It was partially underground, with tunnels for dragons to come and go, swarming around it like ants. They were all black and shiny, and walked in synchronized movements. I think other dragon families are less colorful than ours, so that doesn’t seem so weird to me. Maybe we should say hi to our neighbors? Lefty wants me to type NO!!!!!!! in all caps. With 7 exclamation marks. Noted.

I asked Tippy what she thought, and she said “Dragons Bad.” Well, I guess I don’t really want to meet them if they weren’t nice to my friend. She’s so sweet, and wants to help us with our research, how could anyone not like her? And cleaning up the weird ooze she leaves behind when she walks around isn’t that big of a deal. And her wings are so soft and delicate, like the thinnest and most beautiful sheet of paper.

She’s typing something else now. “Family. Mother. Experiments.” I guess her family were also scientists. This must be their lab, and something happened? She seems upset, so I guess I’ll stop asking questions about it. We will leave the nest alone for now.

msqlFP7.png

[DATE REDACTED]
Tippy wants to make something with me.

I’m not the best at science, but I’m pretty good at wrangling my siblings when they get distracted. Fifteen’s vine farm is going well, Fizzy is making Raspberry water, Moonie has 8 different colored buttons sitting around her, and Lefty is out observing the spooky nest. So I guess I should find something to do.

I know her well enough to know that she’s afraid. All the time. But when Fizzy’s concoctions blow up in his face and the air tastes like citrus for days, she makes this throaty gurgle that I think is laughter. This place must have been lonely before we moved in. She looks like a Coatl, but she is an Aether, and doesn’t want to be alone.

When my siblings get bored with their experiments and abandon them, Tippy has this look in her eyes that says that’s what happened to me, and so I round them up and make them return to their work. She tells me that this computer I’m using has lots of data from long ago, but it's all so tightly regulated into spreadsheets and equations that I can’t make sense of it. Science is like a river, a flow that you must follow to its end point faithfully. It is organic, wild, alive. My family lives by the FAFO method- Fool Around, Find Out. Science is about chasing what excites you, trying something just to see what happens. And the best part is when something you never could have predicted occurs, like when we moved in here and met her.

Tippy has never done anything like that before. She often asks me what the reason is. “Why Moon Do This?” She types, looking over the test tubes filled with Pulp Water and some crystals we found in one of the labs. To see if it explodes, I guess, and Moonie nods. “Why?” Tippy asks. The answer feels self evident to all of us. Just because. Isn’t that what all of life is like? You wake up every day never knowing what will happen. What is a life, if not an endless series of discoveries?

Tippy wants to seal up all those clay tunnels in the hallways, so I agree to help her. I notice that she gets up in the middle of the night, when everyone else is asleep, patrolling the halls a few times before laying back down. I think she is like Lefty, always looking over her shoulder. I don’t understand why, but maybe this will help.

It’s not so cold that my ice won’t melt, so we have to fill the tunnels with something else. We figured out the yellow crystals are the explodey ones, and toss a few down the tunnels to collapse them. Once we’ve shaped the mud into a solid wall, I freeze it so it hardens like a rock. Then we use some of Fizzy’s gross drinks to paint pictures on it.

I paint the Astrolab. We were all hatched there, but I lived there the shortest amount of time. I miss how busy it always was, with at least 3 disasters per day and Aethers frantically rushing back and forth, until I thought the island would tilt from all of us standing on one side. It’s a little lonely with only six of us.

Tippy paints herself in a box, with dark figures standing around her. She paints the black dragon nest, a maze of tunnels so knotted up there’s no room for her to go inside. She paints what I think is the lab, with just her. Then we add drawings of everyone else, though we don’t have the right colors for them- Moonie, Lefty, Fifteen, Fizzy, and me.

I still get confused in the hallways, so we add signs everywhere with directions. “Fizzy’s Drink Emporium” “Dusty Computer Place” “Vine Time” “This way for BUTTONS.” Lefty finds some outside wires that don’t connect to anything, so we bring them inside and hang them across the ceiling like garlands. Fifteen gets really good at growing different varieties of moss, and coats the floor in it like a carpet. Her best, springiest mosses are reserved for a large, circular bed for all of us to curl up in at night. I know that Tippy is sleeping this time because her electric blue spikes fade dark.

We are building a home.
