grub and her brother, binkie, were of the first aethers thrown from the astrolab as it plummeted towards the starfall isles. they crashed down into the igneous fields of the ashfall waste, perplexing the fire dragons that found them. while word spread of the terrestrial return of the aethers, the dragons of sornieth weren't exactly surprised. it had been a little under 60 years since the first ancient dragons emerged in the icefield, and four more had come to light since--the most recent being the undertides, only five years ago. so no, the dragons of the world were not shocked when these strange, erratic moth-like dragons emerged from the craters.

and grub and binkie were the first. almost immediately grub began pestering the dragons they'd all watched from afar with questions. this was her birth element, the territory she and her brother had been passing over when they hatched, and she was elated to be among the ash and flame for the first time. it wasn't even as hot as she had expected! the accents of the dragons around them were a little hard to parse but the base language was still similar, and banescales had an easier time understanding them. grub took to the smithing quickly, and within a few months was creating new alloys and designing new weapons.

grub was moved to the cinderslag, which like all things it embraced with enthusiasm and ease. originally worked as a smith, it was promoted to a slagward--an overseer, a bodyguard of forgemasters, and an advisor. forgemasters are notoriously haughty, and tend to promote dragons with ideas to slagwardens, and co-opt their advice as their own. while it may not see any morality issues with its position above the overworked smiths, it is constantly innovating, failing as much as it succeeds, finding joy in all of it.
