Shukaku is the name of the Ichibi, the one-tailed beast. It was created when the Chakra of the ten-tailed beast was separated as one of the nine tailed-beasts.

For a long time Shukaku lived in a temple in the desert. During the First Shinobi War, Shukaku was captured by disciples of the temple and kept in Sunagakure.
It was sealed in a priest who was kept in a dungeon and constantly guarded. Although the humans saw Shukaku and his host as a scary threat, they both got along and the priest told it that someday someone would teach the beast about acceptance.
Shukaku also had other hosts and was later drawn from them which killed its hosts, before it was sealed in an unborn child, the son of the Kazekage. However, he could not control the beast and killed several citizens, and Shukaku's hate for the humans grew with each day, tormenting the child.

Shukaku could control its host when they slept, so its host was to develop insomnia. It has great physical strength and can manipulate sand to use it as weapon or shield.
As his whole body is made of sand it can hardly be damaged from any opponent's attacks. It is able to use earth and wind Ninjutsu and can combine them to Magnet Release.
