Aerith, and her siblings Imcer, Gensher and Noemine, are their mother's grief-children, their eggs laid as a distraction from the deaths of Aldebaran and Zodiacus. They know this, and all of them have had differing reactions; Aerith's is perhaps the strangest of all, because to Aerith her brothers are not gone.
In her dreams she knows where all the ghost-gyres are. In her dreams, and sometimes in her waking life, she knows the restless dead.

In the rest of her time - the time she spends not asleep - Aerith investigates and experiments with herbs and reagents. Being who she is, sometimes she samples them. Sometimes they open new frontiers of understanding. Most of the time they just get her sick, a fact she accepts equanimously; were it not for easily maintained healing magic, her liver probably would've been in terrible shape by now.
