zBB98Ur.gif History
xxThis used to be a home.
xxBroken branches crack beneath her feet as she cautiously steps into the remains of the ruined camp. The air is still. No birdsong, not even a breath of wind to be found. It is empty, a hollow shell of what used to be a vibrant little society of dragons living here.
xxOrdinarily, she would've turned tail and left. It's none of her business. But something about the scene before her bids her stay, investigate a little longer, just to see for herself what is left. The grass beneath her feet is flattened, trampled over by multiple pairs of feet - if she looks closely enough, she can just barely make out the footprints of other dragons, as well as ones that belong to beastclan members, looks like.
xxThey'd left in a hurry. In the hollowed out trunk of a wizened tree, there's still a pile of glittering rocks - shiny, but ultimately of no real use to beastclans. Someone's prized collection, most likely. There's broken branches strewn everywhere, as well as various knickknacks scattered all over the grassy floor.
xx(Off to the side, there's a tree with dark red stains smeared into the bark, and claw marks at the base of the roots, like someone had been dragged away by force. Her jaw tightens.)
xxSomething's rustling nearby. It could be the wind, or just a stray animal darting into a bush. Ever-vigilant, Elar turns towards the sound, straining her ears to see if she can catch it again. Seconds later, a bush several paces away gives a little shake, like there's something moving about amidst the dense undergrowth. Curious, Elar takes a careful step towards it, making sure not to make a sound and potentially scare off whatever may be hiding within.
xx"...mama..."
xxThat's a voice. A hatchling's, thin and squeaky with fright. Elar halts. Had she imagined that? What would they be doing here in the middle of a ruined camp, all alone? It takes a
moment for the pieces to click together in her mind, revealing a tragic truth - they must have been left behind in the chaos, too young to know any better and too tiny to keep up with the bigger dragons. Their best bet had been to conceal themselves and pray they weren't found. How long they've been hiding, she doesn't know, but it's a terrible thing for anyone to have to go through, much less a hatchling.
xxPushing aside the foliage reveals not one, but two wide-eyed aether hatchlings huddled together in a shivering pile amongst the leaves. Twins, if not for the difference in their eye colours. One of them immediately puffs up protectively, attempting to shield the other and baring tiny fangs at Elar. The other one shrinks back, eyes shining with unshed tears. "You're not mama," she croaks.
xxSomething deep down within Elar stirs, moved by the hopelessly tragic situation these two have found themselves in. Whoever their parents were, they're not here anymore. Leaving them here would be nothing short of cruel - who knows what bigger monsters are out there, ready to make a quick snack out of these two?
xx"I'm not mama," she agrees somewhat gruffly, carefully searching for the right words to say that - hopefully - won't set either of the hatchlings off. She's never been good with the little ones. "Your mama had to go... somewhere. If you come with me, you'll be safe."
xxIt's the best she can hope to offer, at the moment. There's no indication that their parents will return anytime soon, and the forest isn't the safest place for two young children.
xxStooping low to gather up one of the little fluffballs - the one that had been hissing at her earlier - she's met with a squeak of protest and much squirming about. Unexpectedly, however, the remaining female aether starts bawling as soon as she's separated from her nestmate, which in turn sparks even more frantic wiggling from the aether she's holding. Oh, dear. They're not that big compared to her, but still, she's only got two arms.
xx"Hold still," she grunts, but the feisty hatchling in her arms only struggles even more, straining to get back to his nestmate. When she gives up trying to hold him and instead goes to pick up the female aether, she's met with a tiny set of teeth clamping around her arm - it doesn't even hurt, not with how small the young male is, but it's a rather silly sight to have him dangling off of her arm like that.
xxAlarmed and clearly in distress, the hatchling in her arms starts to sniffle again. "Don't hurt Basil," she pleads, gazing up at Elar through teary eyes. "Hurt is bad. Basil is good."
xx"I won't," she reassures the little one, before turning her attention back to Basil - if that's really his name. "I won't hurt either of you. Stop fussing. You'll be safe, I promise."
Basil merely growls, clearly unconvinced. Prying him off takes barely any effort at all, and when she's gotten him off of her arm, she's quick to scoop him up and set him on her back beside the other one.
xx"Enough," she rumbles, and the deepness of it clearly makes Basil think twice, because he pauses in his incessant wriggling to stare up at her.
xx"No hurt Bergie," he proclaims, chest puffed out. He looks unusually proud of himself for a hatchling this young. "Bergie and me, best friends. You hurt, I bite."
xxElar can see that. Best sold together, do not separate. At least they've quit attempting to fight her for now, so she turns her back on the ruined camp - careful not to let them see the more gruesome details - and starts trudging for home.
xxShe hadn't gone far from the hill, at least. By the time she makes it back, the sun is just beginning to dip below the horizon, and the hatchlings are getting sleepy - she hasn't heard a peep from either of them in the past half an hour. It's up to her to get them settled in, seeing as she's the one who brought them home, so she gently sets them down on the ground before getting to work on piecing together a makeshift nest for the two. Just for tonight, until they can put together something more concrete.
xxNeither of them so much as stir when Elar finally settles them into their newly-constructed nest - a somewhat haphazard combination of leaves and soft animal pelts. Curled up together in a pile, they could almost be mistaken for identical twins. The tiniest hints of a smile tug at the corner of her lips.
xx"Welcome home."
shadowv4.png Information
Name // BERGAMOT
-- Origin of name // type of citrus tree, also its fruit (similar to bitter orange), and the essence prepared from the oil of the rind of the fruit (formerly much used in perfumery), 1690s, from French bergamote (17c.), from Italian bergamotta, named for Bergamo, town in northern Italy. The name is Roman Bergamum, from a Celtic or Ligurian berg "mountain," cognate with the identical Germanic word.
xxEarlier (1610s) it was the name for a kind of pear deemed especially luscious; in this sense the word is ultimately a Romanic folk-etymologization of Turkish beg-armudi "prince's pear" or "prince of pears," influenced in form by the place-name (probably not directly from the town name, because it is on the opposite end of the peninsula from where the pear grows). Also used of garden plants of the mint order with a smell like that of oil of bergamot (1843).
