With a voice like leaves rustling in a soft breeze and a deck of cards expertly shuffled in her grasp, Aella sings the song of the futures of others. Her gaze guided by the cardinal winds and the Windsinger’s blessing, she appears in one’s most desperate moments. And with the cards set out before her and a whisper of wind at her side reveals what will become.
That is her legacy. Carved out by action and words, and exactly what she wishes it to be. A legacy is crafted from the word of the collective, and if that is how she is known, that is exactly how she wishes it to be.
Yes, Aella can see the future, but such a concept is not as solid and imposing as one may think. The future is not an unbreakable silver string, nor a stone carved away only by time. It is malleable, and Aella’s carving tools take the shape of her mask and the bells swinging from her feathers. She reaches out to those in their darkest moments. She finds those whose futures are turbulent and dangerous: those whose roads will lead to a terrible tragedy. She is the one who places the cards, she is the one who sees the future, and she is the one who picks the faces she will play. It is her sight that allows her to see what cards will reach them the most. She chooses them wisely, just like her words, spelling out guidance, strength, hope, and drive, and watches as the path shifts to brighter ends. A flourish of wind and the twinkling of bells solidifies such a ploy, and she knows, then, that the one standing before her will work for better things ahead.
And to those who come back to her years later, wondering how she could have possibly known that their lives would turn around, receive the words she’s said every time.
