The town Kosan lived hir whole life has been razed.

Overrun with shadebeasts, left for dead by the gaoler order. In a way, it feels like a terrible punishment for crimes ze did not commit--a crime of birth, hir parents crime of abandoning the order of gaolers they were raised in. Kosan had a husband, a woodcarver who ran a shop in Avalhorn, and Kosan spent hir time raising their sons, a task ze loved dearly.

But when the shadebeasts arrived, it was horrific. Homes destroyed, dragons ze'd known hir whole life lost, hir husband...

Kosan fled with the children. Away into the ice storm, hoping to lose the shade in the carnage and confusion and flurries of snow. When ze found the walls of the Onding Outpost, ze was exhausted. Hir sons could hardly speak, shivering and weak. Hir world had shrunk down to just survival, to the survival of hir children. Even within the Outpost, they were all that mattered.
