’Birdie’ is a low mileage, mechanically unmodified 1997 Trans AM lovingly cared for by her first owner, his son, and now me. Birdie stands out even among her breed - it is hard to find an unmodified 4th generation Firebird as it stands; let alone one so unique! Her glimmering finish is like new inside and out, accented by original golden trim and alloy wheels, and complimented by the black sail panel, rear deck lid, and wing. I am a stickler for keeping things as original as possible, and am continuously researching Birdie, her history, and how to take care of her. Believe me, the service manual is an enthralling read! This is my first car, and like the car, this dragon is special to me! I’m afraid no offer can make me part with her. Built: July 19, 1996 Purchased: August 14, 1996 Purchased by me: August 14, 2022 Delivered: September 3, 2022 |
Did I mention that, while I purchased the car on my birthday quite intentionally, it was a magical coincidence that this is the second time she has been bought on that day? It’s almost like it was meant to be!
Much like the car, this robotic dragon is also powered by a combustion engine. Four silver tailpipes line her back between the edge of her wings, leading to the engine stored within her upper torso, following both a muffler and catalytic converter. Her fuel supply is stored in her tail, and is in constant need of replenishment. After all, it supplies the fuel not only for the engine that drives all of her mechanical and electrical functions, but for the copious flames that grant her the Firebird name! She has given up on reading her fuel level with accuracy, as it is always fluctuating with use, and she would never turn down a little more fuel.
This technology is somewhat similar to the large construction equipment of our own world, which use combustion engines to generate enough power to control massive hydraulic output. Her engine output is also used for hydraulic control, feeding the most torque and direct power to her back legs when running and to her wings in flight. Power is granted to her front legs via a direct mechanical connection to her back legs when in motion, however, this system can be disengaged by shifting out of this option and into ‘park’. A small amount of power is then granted at idle to allow for expressive movement of the front legs, though there is not enough power independently to move her without shifting back into ‘drive,’ or any other motion-capable gear.

. . . Birdie is, generally speaking, a popular dragon within Clan Ridgestone. Sure, she can be a little high maintenance, perhaps a little bit of a diva, and is certainly aware of her value, but she is also one of the most helpful dragons around. Her power is hidden within her generally calm and gentle demeanor, and she will give all of her effort whenever and wherever she is needed. She doesn’t look quite like the typical skydancer, the lights in place of her eyes often hidden, feathered wings replaced by blazing figures of gold, gilded talons alight, and mouth all but gone, but she can see and sense just as any other. Sensors built into her talons and retractable antennae and a wide angle camera built into her gem map her surrounding in great detail. Her software only allows her to process the raw data, and to see maps in wireframe. Yet, anyone who speaks to her would never know this; she vividly describes colors, textures, emotions, smells, and much more. Her designers are forever perplexed by her capabilities, as she will not be the one to answer how she does it. She simply laughs and dances away! |
