CONSCIOUSNESSES are the brains of hives, and tend to work alone. Consciousnesses can be created in a variety of ways. Some consciousnesses are created through hatching eggs, for just as eggs can be modified to change a drone’s physique, they can also be modified to produce a consciousness. Most consciousnesses produced this way emerge first as backups, and only metamorphose into a full consciousness once the previous consciousness has been terminated. Consciousnesses can also be created through assimilation, though this is very rare and unstable.
The more common method of creating a consciousness is through backup code. If a consciousness fears that it might be killed, it can insert some mental code into a drone of its choice that acts as a contingency. The drone, now referred to as a backup, will continue to look and behave like a drone until the circumstances of the contingency - usually the previous consciousness’s death - are met. After this, it will follow a series of pre-programmed instructions.
The instructions typically tell it to find a suitable hiding place and to begin the process of becoming a consciousness, wherein it freezes and metamorphoses into a consciousness, becoming physically larger and undergoing a massive restructuring of its brain. Once the metamorphosis is complete, it sheds its previous carapace and emerges a new consciousness. Many consciousnesses, upon entering near-death, will send a massive burst of information to the backup detailing their memories, personality, and goals, such that the backup might learn from them.
