Backstory
The runaway, illegitimate daughter of a priest and a healer in a faraway Plague clan who ended up in the far end of the Tangled Woods. An expedition to the Scarred Wasteland was arranged by the head healer of Clan Vogelzang, Sieghilde, in order for a few of her nurses to collect samples of the Abiding Boneyard so she could study the different types of bacteria and viruses the area cultivated. With this data, she would be able to formulate cures, and the distribution of these cures would net the clan a good bit of treasure. So two of the nurses, plague-born Sirona and Clara (accompanied by Adalaide for protection), spent a few days camped out at the border between the two flights, spending the days collecting samples, and the nights in sleeping shifts to watch out for danger. On the third night, Adalaide spotted something, or someone, stumbling around in the boneyard. When the Nocturne managed to get a closer look, she found a malnourished Skydancer with a glimmering red hide streaked with dark crackle. "My name is Elema," the Skydancer told her, "thank someone you found me! It feels like weeks since I've seen another dragon." Unsure how to deal with the situation, the Nocturne brought Elema back to the camp. After a very thorough examination by the nurses, they deemed the Skydancer well enough to accompany them back at the clan, but decided to take her straight to quarantine as a precaution. --- Elema remained quarantine for a few weeks, regularly visited by Sieghilde and her nurses, and was given medicine and tablets to help fight off or cure whatever diseases she might have been carrying. If the high (and almost stifling) standard of care wasn't surreal enough, she was also treated to meals several times a day, a luxury practically unheard of in her former clan. She surprised the head healer with the fair amount of medical knowledge she possessed, correctly identifying the ingredients used in the remedies and, when questioned, the proper techniques to deal with various injuries. When Elema was deemed healthy enough to roam, she was instantly offered a position as an infirmary nurse under Sieghilde. However, to the healer's surprise, she turned down the offer, murmuring something about how she'd rather not. Nearby, another one of the clan leaders smiled to herself, ambling off to the nesting grounds. --- A little later, while Elema was lingering around the edges of the lair, Danika approached her with a question. "Do you like hatchlings, darlin'?" the Snapper asked, smiling gently up at the Skydancer. "Hatchlings?" she repeated, staring down at the other dragon. Memories of the nursery back in her birth lair came to mind, of squirming hatchlings and warm nests. "I--yes. I do." |

Biography The dragons that know her would hesitate before calling Elema beautiful, all small and plump in stature, with her shunted wings and shortened snout--she's not exactly a model specimen of her kind. Pretty maybe, but even with her sparkling red hide and delicate features, Elema holds herself more like a warrior than a mother. Outside of the nursery, her stance is defensive, her eyes hard and suspicious--haunted by the wasteland--and when she speaks, it's as if she intends on guarding the true contents of her heart at all times, low and guarded. But the hatchlings adore Missus Lemi, comforted by the scent of cinnamon that lingers on her skin and raised on the hymnal she keeps chained to her waist. Elema claims she is tone deaf, that her singing voice does nothing more than keep pests out of the nursery, that she couldn't lull a hatchling to sleep if her life depended on it, and laughs away the dragons that swear they were raised on her song, but were unable to recall the tune. In this realm of lies and half truths, you learn that secrets have power. Notes
• The hymnal Elema keeps on her hip was formerly her biological father's and is chock full of the songs and stories she grew up on--heavily altered for the diety she now serves under, of course, but she's known to be notoriously protective over it.
