“WE ARE THE UNIVERSE
OBSERVING ITSELF”

The Spiral sat in the keep of his very own observatory, gazing up into the beautiful sky. Once Glimmer had thought he would be a wanderer forever. That he would never settle, would never care for hatchlings, others or his own. Stars glittered through his scales and the magic of the Arcane sparked around him. He was a rather large spiral, scrolls lining his side as he muttered to himself, making notes as he waited for his youngest to return, the bogsneak, was off wandering above with Ballad to take some readings from the Dusk Sanctum for him to review later, Onca was getting better at his readings, Glimmer felt a warm swell of pride. His children had all grown so well, the Glimmer of today could never imagine sending his beloved hatchlings to fight for other clans, not when they had a home of their own to protect, not when he had to protect them too.

PERSONALITY
Deepmine-Aardvark_FLIPPED.gif
Glimmer is a charming, well learned scholar of the arcane. He’s very prone to muttering storms when he gets ideas and thoughts. He’s very organised and loves keeping records and researching. He loves his hatchlings and his mate Equilibrium more than anything in Sornieth and is open and welcoming to all in the clan, they’re his family and despite how far he’s leaned from the original teachings of his ancestors, protecting and being there for his clanmates is what’s most important to him. He’s prone to sudden bouts of mischief with his daughters and best friend Lichtenberg, but to most on first meeting he seems serene and rather serious.

STORY
5hYmalK.gif Glimmer was born of the noble line of Vitali and, from birth, he knew what he would grow to be. From his hatching he would train, then, when he grew he would leave his home and parents and journey forward to find a clan of his own that he would protect until he had his own hatchlings, and the cycle would continue. He was very single minded when he was young, everything, everything rested on his battle prowess. Until he reached the pinnacle of strength there was nothing in his life but training. Since when he grew strong he would finally be able to seek out dragons to care for, those he would protect.

Glimmer was the first to hatch of his clutch, the oldest, of his siblings, and the only one to make it to a new clan. Glimmer was the hardest worker, taking everything that he was from the legends and tales that he heard about Vitali, her strength, her mission, his mission. He trained, and he fought, and he won. One night, when a young Glimmer looked up to the night sky after a day of rigorous training, he saw the stars. Yes, he’d seen the night sky before, but he’d never really looked, they were passing, a brief glance to the sky once or twice to see if it was too late to continue training. But now, he saw them. Glimmer found himself lifting of the ground, clambering through the trees and wrapping himself around it, reaching higher and higher, desperate to see the sky. For once, there was something in his life, something, that took his mind off training.

An interest was born in the young spiral that night, a shining type of wonder. Finally, something caught his interest, something that wasn’t simply fighting, he wanted to learn. He found himself missing training, dipping, running, hiding from his trainers. Sneaking away from battle to libraries, to read, to learn. He started with the stars, with the planets and the sky. Then he moved on to other topics, to law, construction, logic, maths. Whatever he learned however, his favourite books were about the stars, his mind was filled with constellations, white giants, moons and nebulas. The battle formations and war strategies took second place to knowledge, anything and everything that he could get his claws on, he learned, yes he still fought, but the pedestal he put Vitali’s mission and strength upon, crumbled slowly, and for awhile afterwards, without that pushing him forward, he felt empty, without battle to push him on, without Vitali’s goal to press him forward. He floundered, but finally, eventually, he found land, he found safety in learning, and he found himself.

Knowledge lifted him, he found solace in learning once again, reviewing his knowledge of the sky, of the stars, of everything else. He leaned on knowledge like a crutch until he could learn to finally lean on himself. When the time came for him to leave his home, he’d neglected his battle studies to learn about the world around him. When he left, he found himself ignoring what he’d known all his life completely, and making his way from the Starwood Strand to the Tourmaline Archives to learn, to read from new trainers, except these ones didn’t teach him to fight, they taught him history, maths, about the magic of the arcane, about the stars above.

Enchantments, astrology, spells and scripture. He devoured ever scroll and book that he got his claws on, quickly outshining his peers, moving through the vast libraries as quickly and thoroughly as he could, his notes on the libraries tombs spanned as many empty books and scrolls as he could get his claws on. Then finally, he made his way, armed with new knowledge, wonderful knowledge, to the Astrolodome, to converse with mages and astrologists from all around the lands of arcane. Glimmer, while he knew he was smart, he knew he was strong, still yearned for more, reaching out to touch the magic of arcane, spells and magic drifted around him, in the Astrolodome, the stars and the knowledge they held felt close enough to touch.

Glimmer touched the magic of the stars with his bare claws. Finally, after years spent crafting magic, learning science, chemistry, spell craft and astrology. He made his way onwards frightened and filled with awe as he began his climb to the Observatory. The Arcanist’s mutters filled the halls of the sacred buildings, this is where he stayed, well into his adulthood, listening to the whispers and writing down what he heard in scrolls of his own, once or twice he sat in the darkness outside of the keep of the Arcanist himself scribbling everything he heard the god mutter from within. Glimmer’s knowledge of magic and the stars expanded even further than it had in the Tourmaline Archives, in the Astrolodome itself.

Arcane Magic wrapped itself around his claws and clung to his scales, a part of him wanted to remain forever in the wall of the Observatory, just as he’d wanted to stay in the Archives, until he knew all that there was to know. But it was time, he knew, for him to move on. To leave the Arcanist’s keep, armed with his new knowledge and the magic that now surrounded him. He made his way to the Oculus of the Eleven. As a scribe for the scholars at first, keeping a careful track of the fluctuations in magical auras. Glimmer knew in some corner of his mind that he was a scholar of magic, of the arcane, a veritable expert in fact, but sometimes it didn’t feel like that, sometimes he still felt so much smaller than the scholars around him, younger, less clever, not as touched by the magic of the gods.

Glimmer struggled finding his feet, his confidence. It was difficult for him to step from the path of a warrior to one of a scholar, and even more difficult to find confidence in him after letting the pedestal he put battle on crumble. It was inside the Oculus, that he found himself. He went into a silent study, reaching towards the magic that clung to him and finally embracing it into himself. When Glimmer left his chambers again he felt lighter, patches of glittering starlight now melded onto his scales.

He was reborn, moulded with the magic of the stars

Feeling freer than he had in his whole life, Glimmer was ready to finally leave the arcane and expand his knowledge of magic through the whole of Sornieth. He felt relieved to finally leave his homeland as he’d been meant to, all those years ago, finally he walked to path of a wanderer, a warrior and a scholar in one, he shone.

First he made his way forward into the freezing cold of the Icewarden’s domain to take readings from the Frozen Sanctum himself, he camped by it for weeks, trading with nearby clans on the harsh glaciers. Then he carefully made his way to the Rimebone Stockade to speak with researchers and artificers, he was almost sent away, and was allowed inside the upper areas of the stockade to take notes and share research, and was eager to continue on to the Fortress of Ends. But was advised very strictly against it, something about creatures and watchers, he was interested yes, but headed their warnings and returned along the frigid floes back to arcane.

He made his way carefully through each realm of Sornieth to read the magic out puts of the different sanctums, to study the land and the magic. Then he met Minuet, a relative of his, another descendant of Vitali with a young son, that was soon to leave their home. Glimmer took the young Obelisk with him as a favour originally, but grew to care for him as his own, and he took him with him, to the Daylight Sanctum. This was the first time Glimmer ever saw an Emperor. He shielded his charge from Luminax as they passed, watching the creature on the horizon carefully as he taught his distant nephew how to take readings from the great sanctums.

They journeyed around the edges of the Emperor’s Wake. Glimmer kept the Obelisk behind him the entire time, the magic that surrounded him crackling under his scales as they finally reached the Shadowbinder’s Domain. His Nephew took the reading of the dusk sanctum himself and Glimmer felt his pride in him grow. On their way to the plaguebringer’s domain saw the pair trapped under the Foxfire Brambles, Glimmer wandered away for a moment to try and find a way out, and found himself trapped and ensnared in the swamp lights, until he was rescued by the most beautiful dragon he’d ever seen.

Glimmer turned away from his telescope with a small huff, turning to the scroll at his side to scribble a few quick notes before rolling up the now crowded scroll and calling it a night, he would transcribe those notes into a more legible script when the morning came, but now he had a home and a family to return to.

Glimmer slunk down the steps of the observatory, satisfied in the silence of the night. He paused, looking up with a pleased huff as the magical aura around him flickered and expanded, lessening the tingling under his scales, now that there was no worry about the magic tainting his results he was safe to set it free. Turning his head, his eyes landed on one of the few dragons that was still awake at this time, Treachery, sat alone watching the night, their three heads tilted towards the moon. When Glimmer first arrived in the Under Brambles he was terrified of the Emperor, his only other experience with them being the vaguely volatile one with Luminax.

“It’s a beautiful night isn’t it.” He called out, bright and cheerful. The Emperor nodded silently, turning one of their heads towards him.

“Indeed.” their voice was a quiet, echoing whisper, Glimmer couldn’t help the small, shocked smile that crossed his snout, a few months ago the Emperor was rarely seen in the wider clan territory, frightened of so many dragons being around at once, they were still reserved but clearly far more comfortable.

They sat together in silence for a few moments before the Emperor turned to him ”Shouldn't you be going home now? Your mate will be waiting.”

Glimmer beamed up at the sky at the mention of Equilibrium “Yes, It’s time for me to head home,” he turned to Treachery “you’ll be okay out here on your own?”

The Emperor smiled wryly ”I am waiting, Hollow is out late again with her apprentice, I believe they will return soon.”
