Rydian, an alchemist, is entranced with harnessing the power of chemical light and utilizing it in daily use. While he does occasionally dabble in the classic potion-making and apparition casting to keep his workshop afloat and his property, his property, his true curiosities lie with unraveling the mysteries of the elements and the interactions between science and magic and light. For days will Rydian slave away in his lab, tinkering with various solutions and concoctions in the hopes of finding the most sustainable and brightest light source of them all. He'll never admit it, but Rydian's parents, or lack thereof, are a driving cause in his motivations. While he barely remembers either one, he starkly remembers the darkness that followed their departures. Rydian's unknown parents are the sun of his tangential universe, the constant longing that causes him to never stray too far away from the light that shines on his habitual orbit. In some way, although he knows the association is foolish, by capturing the brightest light of them all, his own parents might be drawn back in.

Prior to Effigy, Rydian has always preferred working alone in his lab, afraid of revealing his intentions to any. But with money tight, Rydian has been forced to take Effigy under his wing to train in the ways of traditional alchemy.

Rydian ended up in the care of Timo, the nursery caretaker of Roost's Edge. As a hatchling he made sure to probe and question Timo about his parents constantly, although the Coatl would always give him the same information that Rydian himself knew: nothing.
