abiding boneyard

When she is just a child, she gets lost in the desert. The heat shimmers across her skin, and particles of sand blown by the wind sting at her eyes. The Abiding Boneyard is like any other desert, really. The difference is that there's nowhere you can go.
Nobody makes settlements among the noxious dunes. They build their homes out of sight of the brown-green sky. The bones that rise jagged from the ground, so alike to gates, are left untouched. It's too dangerous. And so, when you get lost, you are totally alone.
They - her parents, her sister Lamp, and she - were almost home. Dailun and Sarcosuchus live in the neighbouring region, within the cool shade cast by the Shadowbinder's great forest. It was just misfortune that they'd gone to visit the Starfall Isles right before the birth of their first hatchlings. Esch, Lamp and Diox had awoken for the first time to heat and rot-stench, blinking open jewel-red eyes. And then Diox had been lost in the desert, never to be found again. And now...
She's old enough, now, to understand just a little. They've been travelling for weeks through the desert, their parents almost blind with grief for the loss of their son, and determined that their other two children don't suffer the same fate. And yet...
They're only half a day's flight away from the great looming tangle of forest that marks the entrance into the Shadowbinder's domain. And Esch has been forgotten.
Ah, it's partially her own fault, really. She could have given chase, followed them out of the Boneyard, but she didn't. She's only ever known the desert, and it calls to her in a way the shadows never could. So, she stayed. Alone in the desert.
Someone's watching.

years later...
Caratacos squints at her, incredulous. "So."
They're sat in a shadowy booth, right at the back of a tavern buried deep within the Hellwell Undercroft. Esch flicks her ears, thinking of the sun, so far away. This cramped little room is lit by only a few dim gas lamps. (When she finally decides to leave the Scarred Wasteland, she'll go east, she decides. There is always light in the Lightweaver's land.)
None of her thoughts are said aloud. Instead she echoes the star-speckled dragon. "So." To everyone else in the tavern, she is talking to herself. Alone at the table. The Tn-Tal game tiles scattered across the table are moving on their own in halting turns.
He grimaces when he makes a pretty awful tactical mistake, and she sweeps three of his tiles off the board - fifteenth, second, ninth. "So. Elephant in the room. Why can you see me?"
Esch thinks of scrolls off-handedly. One unfurls in her mind, a lazy list scrawled in an unknown hand. She deciphers two of the words before it disintegrates into nothing. Chameleon. Mage. She shifts her fifth tile one scratch to the right. "You're using simple cloaking magic, aren't you?"
He moves his eleventh tile forwards, sweeping her ninth off the board, and when he avoids replying, she knows she's got him. Her eighth captures his eleventh, lying in wait. She's good at Tn-Tal. She needs no scrolls telling her how to win here.
She may as well tell him who she is. If he was any danger, the scrolls would have spoken a warning. But their edges so far have been delicate, a little frayed, and pristinely-cut with a delicate talon. He's no great threat for now.
His fourth moves back, a defense. She speaks, lowering her voice. "I'm a Scrollseer, you know."
He blinks, caught off guard, and then frowns as she chases his fourth with her seventh, blocking his next move. Then he shimmers slightly, and grows a little more imperceptible, blending in to the blackened bone of the seat he's in. "A seeker of truth, huh?" With his first tile rendered useless, he's forced to use the diamond he's been keeping safe behind the line of the thirteenth, twelfth and sixth. He curves it forwards, knocking the seventh aside, but not off the board. "You're missing the yellow eyes for something like that."
She has him now. A scrap of parchment twitches somewhere in her subconscious, but she ignores it for the moment. Doesn't matter that he's now almost fully invisible, with only the red of his eyes remaining, carefully watching the board. "Been looking at my eyes a lot, have you?" Her own diamond moves forwards in a dance, taking its place next to his. It's over, he's lost. The parchment twitches more forcefully, and Caratacos blinks slowly, a ghost in the room.
And then she notices. Oh. Oh, shi-
He blocks her diamond with his sixth. The game is over. Both diamonds are trapped. A truce. A draw.
He vanishes completely, and she feels a brush of air pass by before she can say anything, so she flings open scrolls in her mind as wide as she can, yells into them, Let me see!!
He's good. All she manages to catch is a glint of black and white scales as his tail vanishes out of the door, and the tangled words in the scrolls are laughing at her mockingly. Damn it! How interesting! He can't just leave now! This is the first time she hasn't won against somebody in this tavern!
She wraps herself in cool words of imperceptibility - a very poor imitation of his work, but enough to visibly startle the dragons nearby (who have been subtly watching her talk to absolutely nobody at all) - and gives chase. "Hey, you! Wait!"
