Biography
The wind rages through the mountains, howling and biting in a hail of white anger as it comes down around him. There’s ice forming on the tips of his wings and along the side of his face, but he doesn’t seem to care, not anymore, not after that night. It’s nothing but a vague memory somewhere in the back of his mind now. The only thing he does remember vividly is the cold. The agonizing stabbing in his lungs with every inhale of air, the biting numbness in his legs followed by the warm embrace of darkness.
A tingle in the air catches his attention and he pushes the memory back down again. Something churns in his blood, responding to the sudden shift in the atmosphere on instinct. On his shoulder, his little friend shivers uneasily.
“You can feel it too, don’t you?” Antares says, pulling his cowl a bit lower to cover Minkie.
Antares growls at the unseen force that scares his friend, and the howling wind echoes in response.
A storm is coming.
For a while, he watches as the sky grows darker, wondering if he should stay in the mountains just in case someone gets lost in the storm later tonight, but he decides against it. As one born from the Ashfall Waste, Akemi wouldn’t know what to do if the weather turns worse. Besides, he can’t stand the thought of leaving her alone like that. With practiced ease and a little help from his amulet, he reaches for the magic within him. It surges up like an avalanche in his blood. A ravenous wave of power that drives him to the edge of something close to despair. Something that can only be guided by the power of his bracelets. It spreads through his veins, cold and unforgiving until it fades away into a flurry of snow.
The world washes away in a blur of white as he dispels the snow around him. It doesn’t take long before he’s on the path that leads back to their little cabin. Just a little more and he’ll be home. Although he doesn’t really taste it anymore, he still wonders what kinds of food Akemi brought back with her. The memory of food and warmth puts a smile on his face but it’s tainted with the bitterness of not being able to enjoy it anymore. Not that he would ever tell Akemi that. It would take days of torture before he’d ever admit he can’t taste whatever she cooks.
A scream cuts through the air and his thoughts, jerking his attention back to the here and now. Either someone fell down a slope, or they got lost in the mountains. Whatever it is, they’re definitely in trouble.
Already tucking herself firmly underneath his shroud, Minkie clicks something that sounds like a question.
“Of course, we’re going to help,” Antares answers as he picks up speed with a downward snap of his wings.
The frozen lump he uses for a heart cracks a little as he stumbles upon the scene. Akemi is being held down by a grinning rogue while the other of the pair is wrapping her wings down and behind her back. Something thunders through his blood, setting his cold flesh ablaze with a roaring rage. How dare they touch his friend like that?! Bracelets already glowing underneath the strain, he moves.
“No!’ Akemi growls, shaking off the chains that wrap around her torso, and then wrenching free of the claws that hold her with a strength born from desperation. “ANTARES, GET BACK, IT’S A TRAP!”
Turning to look at her, Antares slides down into the snow, looking up just in time to watch as a crossbow bolt crosses his vision.
One of the rogues cackles madly, the sound echoing through the mountains. “Bring it, Phantom!”
Antares attacks first, claws out, and crosses the distance between them in a heartbeat, slashing at the pearlcatcher’s throat. His claws slice through the air instead as the rogue shifts away with a sharp twist of his body. Before he can attack again though, the other one is already coming up behind him, the sharp point of his Kusarigama nicking the skin on his upper leg.
Antares growls, the touch of his breath freezing one of the attacker’s hind legs as he narrowingly avoids another swipe of the Kusarigama. To his surprise though, the frozen leg doesn’t stop his attacker from coming straight at him.
With a snarl, he snaps a wing down and to the side, blinding his attackers in a sudden gust of snow. Antares is a whirl of white and blue, bracelets glowing fiercely around him in a flex of power. When the snow finally settles, blood drips down his wings from the chains wrapped around them but he doesn’t care. He lives, they don’t.
Antares lunges back into motion, startling Akemi for a moment with his blood-covered appearance until she realizes most isn’t his. “Let’s go home,” He croons softly, helping her to remove the chains from her own wings.
“Yeah,” She answers, tucking her snout underneath his chin for a moment before she turns her head away again.
