Steadfast is not discriminatory. He'll give it that. Plague and nature and all the flights united - though in gangs and groups that haunt the streets. Not united under a common flag of survival, just under a uneasy truce. He knows about the closed doors that must not be opened, about the survival-of-the-fittest nature of the town. He knows Steadfast has issues. But he's the Mayor, and he is above all that.
He knows of the shady goings-on, of the world being pulled apart. That is not his issue.
He is the Mayor.
And his only job?
Keeping Steadfast alive.

What does it matter that someone who looks just like him waits around every corner?
What does it matter that they look just slightly wrong?
