Lin was found wounded and dying as a hatchling by another pearl cerdae, a blooming one called Jangli. Jangli fed Lin one of the seeds he kept as the oldest of the herds few pearl cerdae, and the vine that grew from it wound around Lin's body and kept him alive. His wings did not take very long at all to fade away, and his hind legs are entirely supported by the vines. As an adult he protected his herd fiercely before eventually leaving them to explore the Labyrinth alone. He found a stretch of territory uninhabited by other dragons and formed bonds with the Beastclans there, patrolling it to guard it from the shade and other invaders. When Harte stumbled into his woods, coughing and angry at the Windsinger and Gladekeeper alike, Lin approached her. Calmly, confidently, he told her of the cure she had come searching for--a seed from the Great Tree, the gift of stubborn survival. He did not even think to tell her of its price, and when her grief and fury overtook her he lingered at the edge of her storm, guarding her as he protected his woods, and joined her when it settled.
