The freedom of the ocean. It had always been a part of Axel's life. From the moment he opened his eyes, the crashing of enormous waves and the whimsical cries of the gulls had been music to his ears. As soon as he was old enough to stand on his own feet and grip the wheel of a ship, it was obvious that he had the ability to navigate the unpredictable seas better than anyone save his own father. He spent his childhood learning the shanties of his father's crew. His father and surrogate uncle taught him how to defend himself while his mother showed him the medical arts. When he was old enough, Axel separated from his parents and began to captain a ship of his own. His vessel, the Shifter's Eye, was the only friend he both had and needed for a good portion of his life from that point on. Initially cruel, cunning and ruthless as was becoming of a pirate, coming into contact with Xia, Nero, and Ren eventually dragged another, more cheerful and friendly side out of him that few other than close friends and family ever get to see. It was strange at first... feeling both responsible for and attached to anyone other than himself and his parents, but it wasn't long before Axel's bond with his newfound friends was as unbreakable as the Mother Ix herself. He would do anything to protect his new charges, going so far as to sacrifice parts of his very body to keep them safe. Anyone that doubts this need only examine him long enough to notice that he is missing his right eye, right hand, and left leg to find truth in the claims. Axel was always an optimist. He rarely saw the glass as half empty, but this faith was put to the ultimate test when he found himself held prisoner by a group of individuals that saw themselves as the world's saviors. The torture forced upon him during this time dealt more damage to his psyche than he is willing to admit, but eventually, with the help of Eric and Myra, he found freedom once more. The passage of time has allowed him to take steps towards moving on from this harrowing trial. These days, most newcomers that stumble across him will find no sign of his previous experiences, but nothing can truly erase the past... |

Thanks to his past, however, Axel's personality is anything but stable. When he is alone, he will start to break. His insecurities begin to weigh heavy on his shoulders, and he begins to mutter to himself, occasionally going so far as to quietly sob to himself. It's rare that he ever makes it this far, but when he does he starts scrabbling for any sort of hold he can get on reality. His ship is littered with scratches here and there from where he gouged it with his hook trying to regain control. This state of Axel's being can and will worsen over time depending on his surroundings. If he is in a generally open area at the time, his emotions tend to remain on a relatively even and manageable level. The smaller the space he is in, however, the quicker he is to fall and the more he will lose himself. It is very difficult for Axel to drag himself back to reality if he is in a small area because of his claustrophobia. Only three people know about this side of Axel as he is rarely alone and even those three have never seen it, only knowing of its existence because Axel himself told them about it as a precaution.
Axel's third side is more commonly known among his friends, but it's the side he struggles to keep in check the most. Because he is a shifter, Axel harbors the personality and instincts of a wild dire wolf deep inside of himself. Whenever conflict arises, this feral side of him starts to bubble up and cry for release. Axel is, more often than not, able to keep it under control and make it through the confrontation with a clear head, but on the chance that the situation worsens, the personality breaks free. Once let loose, Axel loses all semblance of sanity. His movements become unnaturally quick and precise and he often fails to differentiate friend from foe. He rarely speaks during this time, generally uttering only various grunts, snarls, and growls akin as if he were actually a wolf. When he does speak, his words are often harsh insults meant to challenge his enemies. Once the conflict at hand finally dies down, Axel's feral side will gradually calm and allow his true self to regain control. Depending on the severity of the situation and the amount of time for which he was lost, Axel's memory of the events that transpired during that time period can range anywhere from crystal clear, to somewhat fuzzy, to completely nonexistent.
Note: Eyepatch is supposed to be over his right eye. Darn it, why must male pearlcatchers face left?
