The survivor of a terrible ritual, Eira hides in a deep hollow when the Gaolers come for her clan. They deserve it, she knows. She can think clearly, but most of the clan has been changed, touched. They swarm and attack anything that approaches, and sometimes their targets become touched in the same way. Certain that she would no longer be seen as one of them, Eira stays carefully hidden.

But she, too, has been changed. Once the rest of her clan is gone, taken or defeated, the feeling grows within her. The longing, the silence. With no more reason to stay, she allows her whims to lead her westward. Packs of mirrors snap at her as she passes overhead. The boils of their domain are harsh on her delicate skin, and she is thoroughly relieved when she gets to the other side, to the Arcane sea.

But the nomadic mirrors are not the only dragons who have no regard for a single Veilspun. She witnesses Venia pluck a bloom from Ashling's horns. Furious and heartbroken, Eira draws forth a dark illusion, confusing the coatls and their lackeys for just long enough to pull Ashling from the lair.

He sobs and thanks her as they drift onwards. And within Eira's breast, a darkness continues to grow.
