Biography

Myrddin

Myrddin was found as a newborn hatchling curled up in the roots of a tree in the shadowy depths of the wildwood. A few dragons tried to lead him to a more populated area where he could be looked after, but he only watched the other dragons and didn't speak, and nobody could convince him to leave his makeshift nest. The dragons brought him plants to line his nest with and returned daily with bags of insects for him to eat. As the hatchling grew stronger, he started to burrow into the earth.

He spoke his first words shortly after reaching adolescent size. While he had never talked before, he'd had plenty of time to listen, and was able to thank the woodland dragons for their help and to finally introduce himself: his name was Myrddin and he wanted to become a witch. He was still attached to the dense inner forest, so he set up shop just above his old burrows and started to weave saplings together into domed walls. With a little help from Silvio, he created his own witch's cottage with a winding labyrinth of a basement. Upstairs he had a tiny library, a specimen cabinet, and a stone hearth. In the basement there were storerooms and studies in which he began to hoard supplies, scrolls, artifacts, and experiments.

These days Myrddin can be found anywhere within the deep center of the wood. He's always working spells and experiments, and can be relied on for magical advice and assistance as long as one is willing to travel to his headquarters. Silvio often functions as a messenger between Myrddin and the outside world by conveying visitors, letters, books, and supplies. Myrddin has amassed a decent collection of books on spells, potions, and magical theory from all over the world, and always has a large stack of borrowed books waiting to be returned to some library or fellow practitioner. While Myrddin has learned to read many languages both dead and alive over the course of his studies, his own notes are always in a secret code he developed as an adolescent. His discoveries are freely conveyed to anyone who asks, but would remain frustratingly opaque to any burglar who managed to find his journals.

One thing that puzzled the forest dragons about Myrddin is the fact that he never learned to fly. They have speculated that there is something wrong with his wings, or that he could only fly if he had learned it from an adult nocturne when he was younger, or that he's stuck on the ground because he is agoraphobic. Whatever the reason, Myrddin has never mastered the air like other nocturnes. He gets around on the forest floor or by climbing trees and navigating the branches like a squirrel. He also continues to have an affinity for the earth, digging and tunneling in the soil, but occasionally sleeps hanging from low branches with his wings wrapped around himself like a bat.
