Marcel is the commune's rune carver. He carves runes both into stones and onto dragons upon request. He's extremely peculiar, and has a very off-putting aura that sends most others in the opposite direction. There's nothing particularly malicious about him- he just... kind of gives you the creeps. His gait is disjointed and staggering, his voice is quiet, raspy, and often gets caught in his throat, and he rarely leaves his den during the day- to the point that stepping out in the light nearly blinds him for at least a half hour. Despite outward appearances, he's an excellent magician and surprisingly wise. Though rarely asked for advice, if you come to him for a rune carving, he'll often sprout it unprompted, knowing untold details without explanation. His rune carvings are expert and have a success rate of one hundred percent. In order to procure his services, you must arrive on any night in which the moon shines. If you attempt to arrive during a new moon or a night adjacent to one, you'll be met with an empty den and complete silence. No one knows where he dissappears to during this time, and no one dare ask. If you attempt to arrive during the day, you'll simply receive no response and be completely unable to enter. On a moonlit night however, if you knock 3 times and whisper a short chant, you'll be allowed to enter the dim and smoke-shrouded chamber burrowed into the side of a small hill. It's damp, cluttered, and stuffy, making it difficult to see and disorienting to enter. There are stacks of various stones, spell books, carving tools, and other needed materials absolutely everywhere, some tall enough to touch the ceiling. Maneuvering through can be difficult- and some larger or more clumsy dragons may have to ask for a smaller commune member to request a stone in their place. You'll usually find Marcel in the very back, curled up and puffing on a pipe. Sometimes you might catch him actually working on something- but this is rare, as he's usually rather secretive about his process (when carving runes on an individual, he generally insists on a blindfold). He uses extremely complex magic for his runestones, and he does NOT trust any other dragon to dare attempt them. The only time he'll be actively hostile is if someone is purposefully attempting to gain information on his work. He's a bit lonely honestly. He has few if any friends in the clan- but he also purposefully keeps to himself, and this furthers his sense of isolation. There are a few who try to befriend him, but he struggles to hold a conversation and can often come off rude when not intending to. No one really knows if Marcel is happy, because no one really knows him at all. Though, he's stayed in the commune for years now and has never raised a complaint, so... he must not be too miserable. |
