Scorpius has long been a seeker, roaming the southern isles with his partner and mate Aquila. It's important work, of course, but he tries not to let it consume him. For all the shade in the land, the land is still there, growing and thriving with beauty. Scorpius points it out when he can, bringing flowers and sunsets and birdsong to Aquila's attention. She has no patience for it, but to Scorpius, it's important to remember what it is they're protecting.

Their current mission takes them north, through the Plague domain. It's a difficult and uncomfortable place to be, but this, too, is a land full of life and love. All of the seething boils and swarming insects, all the strange smells and stranger fungi- all of it has its own beauty, a vision which would be erased by the shade just like everything else.

As Aquila grows weak and hazy with the thick presence of the shade, Scorpius grows curious. He would have expected life itself to thin out, where the shade is thickest. But if anything, it seems to have the opposite effect. Strange plants and stranger creatures are growing here, plentiful enough to sustain two clans in proximity. For the first time, Scorpius silently begins to doubt.
