"Come see the butterflies flutter by before they leave! Their lives are fleeting, like the summer breeze, but the joy they bring is eternal."

In the remnants of a field once full of flowers and life, a warm wind tugs at the coats of drakes that march through the snow and frost. Some swear they can see a little red butterfly in the dead of winter, dancing and bobbing about when the cold winds blow. Those who follow it never return, lost in a dream of warmth and clear skies with playful warm drafts tugging at frozen wings.

This is the tale of the Barghest Lalita.

Not many make deals with Barghests, especially those left as wisps of dreams long lost to time. And yet, they can become such strange things when they accept such a bargain. A dreamwalker, cursed to wander the world in a daze, never truly awake nor asleep, but also never truly alone. The sight is rare, if not harmless for the most part. But stranger still are the pups that rise from their shared dream, wandering to explore the facets of the world they now share. Where they cannot walk, their pups can race, taking what little they can of the waking world to walk in their own dream, one they will always find shared with another...

In the cold light of the winter moon, two pups rose in the dream of a season past. A summer breeze, bright red poppies dotting a field in a ruin, butterflies dancing about as distant cheers echo just out of sight. The races for the Summer Solstice, and the right to impress some summer sphinxes to bring home, are fond memories for Ayumu. Even as he feels the snow crunch beneath his paws, he can imagine the clovers beneath him. He can see them bend, hear the buzz of bees nearby, smell the wildflowers all around him. He hardly notices the wisp by his side as she plucks a poppy from the ground, darting over to him.

The pups stir to the sound of laughter, like the chime of a bell. Petals surround them, shifting with each little breath they take. They laugh with the wind, chasing each other about the meadow as their parents watch, eyes alight at the awe of the season long lost. The petals leave faint red spots along their flanks, their wings taking the worst of it with each tussle and roll. It isn't long before the young remnants of a memory race off, eager to share more of this warmth with others.

Ayumu is found when dawn breaks, still as a statue in the snow. His eyes are closed, his breath leaving faint puffs of steam in the freezing air. Ice cracks as trees slowly shift in the biting winter wind, leaving frost along his coat. Even his lashes are frozen, turning his very form to an icy caricature of the boisterous drake he'd once been before Ophelia.

And there, in the snow, are a pair of identical tiny pawprints, bounding away into the Starwood Strand, as if two young pups had just had a romp around in the drifts of snow, caking fuzzy bellies in frost they'd never truly feel.
