A warm night wind blew across the trading town of Salkhi’s Outpost; A gentle wind that stood reminder of the season. The town seemed more quiet as denizens observed the stars in the sky. And with good reason, for it was on this particular spring night that the moon blushed sanguine. Away from the awe and fanfare of the bloodmoon’s arrival, a Coatl curls closer around her eggs with gentle grace. They shuffle slightly in their nest of soft sheets and dried flowers as they look towards the sky, anxious, waiting. Then, as the moon began its journey to luminous ivory once again, a rustling of movement takes the dragoness’ attention. And emerging forth from the shadows was a great hound-like creature, rust red in color, noble in stature. Hemlock. He lovingly nuzzled his mate as he settle by her side. He was finally here. As if sensing the timing, telltale cracks began to form across the eggs’ surface. The couple watched as their children emerged from the splintered remains of their prison shell, a signifier of their birth. Pups in rich hues of earthen tones were soon sprawling across their bed of cotton and flowers. Danaina cleaned the last of the eggshells off her children before leaning into the warm embrace of her mate. Above them, the moon disappears in anticipation for its rebirth in white. The third child took the name Larkspur with pride. A free spirit through and through, they went wherever the south winds blew. Never certain where they would end up or where they would go. Yet they followed with nary a doubt or worry in their smile and gait. And everywhere they stepped foot on, so too did wildflowers sprout and bloom. And it was those very flowers and herbs which did fast wilt as Larkspur left for new lands. Thus did this cycle repeat over and over again. Soon, bards told tales of the Spring Herald: “When telltale signs of warm wind blow aflutter, so too a hound, dark as the moonless night he was born under. |
