The entry is written in faded ink, a date scrawled at the top of the page next to a short title that reads “A Touch of Ice”. It is the account of one Carmen Greenlee regarding a strange ice carving. Winter is always a time of wonder. I’ve been living in the Starfall Isles for many years, and one of the festivities that marks the winter is our annual ice carving contest. I attend every year, watching artisans carve great sculptures from blocks of ice. Despite the contest taking place in a location so well known for its magic, one of the rules is that all of the pieces must be carved entirely by hand without the aid of sorcery. I’ve been amazed each year at how life-like the carvings are. Individual scales and claws etched from the ice into glassy sculptures, many of which tower above the observer. Such craftsmanship has always stunned me, so it was not unordinary when I first laid eyes upon an extraordinarily life-like carving that resembled a wolf-esque beast. I thought it was carved in the likeness of some creature from an old folk-tale. I remember admiring the craftsmanship, seeing how it glinted with earthy streaks of brown and gold interspersed amidst the clear ice. I reached out to touch it, running my hand across the surface of the ice. I wasn’t supposed to, but I felt almost compelled in that moment. I was surprised when the tally of votes came in that the sculpture had not won the contest. Even more so when I found that it had not been ranked among the honorable mentions and most everyone I talked to seemed to have no recollection of it at all. Since the ice festival, I’ve dreamed of that carving every night. At first, I barely recognized it perching in the background of my dreams. Things around me began to get colder as time went on. I started to wake up with chills in the night, finding myself drenched in a cold sweat. Some nights, I feel as if I am turning to ice itself. That statue is always there, staring at me right before I wake, its eyes gleaming nearly golden in the light. We attempted to follow up with Carmen, but found that she had been found deceased several days after giving her statement. In the reports describing her recent passing, it was noted that she had passed away in her sleep. Peculiarly, it appeared that the heater in her home had gone out and she had been found frozen solid.
