Biography

Champion's Weapons Bottled Embers Molten Crucible Tarnished Chain

Like many dragons of the Ashfall Waste, Balberith learned metalworking and blacksmithing. His heritage granted him unusual abilities, and he became skilled at creating enchanted weapons, armor, and talismans.

He received a request for aid from the Icewarden's exalts: A mysterious beast had been stalking isolated clans in the wilderness, and in recent years, the losses had become intolerable. Balberith was asked to craft chains that were not only strong enough to restrain the beast, but able to penetrate the world of dreams — for the beast stalked its victims both in the waking world and the dreamscape, and the hunters needed to be able to pursue it even in the realm of dreams.

Balberith finished crafting the chains, and he delivered them to the Southern Icefield. He was meant to accompany the Icewarden's warriors into the winter darkness, to deploy the chains against the beast.

Instead, he became infatuated with her. And though he did pursue her with the intent of binding her, it was not so that she would be imprisoned in the Fortress of Ends, but so that she would be his.

For her part, the beast, Gremory, saw his infatuation as an opportunity. Being bound to the powerful blacksmith offered her some protection, not just from the exalted warriors, but also from the other fiends prowling the blizzard-blasted plains.

Two hunters went into the wilderness, but only one returned: Balberith, the enchanted chains wrapped around his wings, and with the dark beast bound to his shadow.

For most of the year, he lives in the high peaks of his homeland, where only few dragons tread. But when the days grow shorter and winter approaches, he finds himself drawn back to the emptiness of the Icefield.

In the end, he loved the beast too much to bind her completely. When winter comes, the chains shatter, and she bursts from his shadow to roam the land again. What she does during these journeys is of no concern to him, and he never questions her.

It does not matter, he always thinks, so long as she returns to his side.
