Tarep comes from a forest clan that had been wiped out by the sawtute (humans). She is extremely hostile to any sawtute or ayuniltìranyu (avatars) that she comes across, though she will stop short of killing them.

She tells those in her clan that she did not originally have Eywa-illuminated eyes, that they came to her after a powerful experience while she was wandering the forest, injured and alone, about to give up hope. Her name didn't used to be Tarep either, but she won't reveal what it once was. She insists that she only be called Tarep now as a tribute to Eywa for saving her life.

Tarep cares deeply for those in her clan and will offer safe harbor to anyone who comes to her, but if they show sympathies or ambivalence about the sawtute, she will be quick to correct them. She would consider it a betrayal for someone to be simultaneously accepting her help and helping a tawtute or uniltìranyu.
