Iri was born on the edge of the Sea of a Thousand Currents and the Ashfall Waste. Due to the strange intertwining magics and the slight edge towards Fire magic, Iri was born aligned with Fire rather than the usual Plague or Water magic more typical of the species.

Iri found out quickly that he greatly preferred lava pools to water due to his tendency to warm up the water without meaning to and potentially harming the water life. Others of his kin found this abhorrent and instead of trying to help him control his Fire magic in water, they chose to shun him instead.

Understandably, this upset him very much and instead of staying and being shunned, he took off to live further in the Waste. Iri wanted to be as far away from other kelpies as much as possible. He even chose to take the form of a Bogsneak dragon. Partly to get away from being a kelpie, but at the same time, honoring that heritage by choosing the kind of dragon most would associate living around places where kelpies roam.

Iri became something of a legend, as he would observe dragons from a distance. He was fascinated by their society, but fearful of being rejected again. Any time a dragon would approach or Beastfolk, he would disappear under the lava. Sometimes, while under that lava he would change back to his true kelpie form. However, despite his ability to shapeshift, he was unable to completely transform into a dragon. His mane and finned tail remain even when transformed. Iri figures that his incomplete transformation is a result of not being taught properly, much like how he lacks the usual deceptive and cruel nature others of his kind reserve for their prey of Beastfolk and dragons.

One day, an island appeared, seeming to be made from molten rock. Even more of note was that there were a lot of dragons camping out on that island, as if waiting for something to happen. Iri started to feel some concern as this was a new thing and those dragons didn't look happy. However, he figured if he stayed in his pool, he'd be fine.

Stories of his mysterious nature eventually found their way to Izar and her group as they wandered about trying to figure out the state of the world and find a new home. Iri was caught up in one of Izar's illusions; she had made it seem like his lava pool had shifted from where it was and once he went in it, she used her Shadow magic to paralyze him in order to get him to talk.

Iri told him his backstory-that he was an odd kelpie that loved lava more than water and was cast out by his people for it. Izar revealed her nature as a kitsune and Rhaegal his being a leshie. Sir Barkley and Azalea were quickly introduced after. Sensing a sort of kinship with the group, Iri asked if he couldn't join. Izar and Rhaegal didn't care if he did and Sir Barkley and Azalea were happy.

Iri wasn't as interested in the changing world as Izar and Rhaegal, but wanted to no longer be alone. Finding himself in the Shifting Expanse with his new friends and ever curious about dragon culture, he went with them to join Clan Spiraling Tempest. While Izar was quick to join the Intel Subdivision, and then Rhaegal went to join the Culinary Subdivison, Iri decided that the Nest Watch Clan Subdivision would be best. That way he could have fun and continue to learn about dragons.

He has made his den have a large lava pool and a smaller, off to the side water pool. Iri has decided to try and get better control over his powers in water, as he does want to be able to swim in water without worrying. He also collects anything associated with volcanic activity and occasionally things found in water. And seaweed. A lot of seaweed. That said, he enjoys hanging out with his friends when not at work, especially since he loves playing with Azalea and Sir Barkley.
