"Soon, you will all see." ╰───────────────────────────────────╯ Constricted pupils. Rotting wood. The acrid smell of rusting metal. Aellyn scoured his room, desperately clawing for the one thing he needed, the last thing he needed to complete his craft. The stench of the tonic that sat in the middle of the round room, bubbling and popping angrily, covered the cramped area, leaving the ridgeback nauseous and a bit lightheaded. Where had he put it?! It wasn't always like this. Aellyn wasn't always this messy, this... absentminded. He used to be powerful, once. He used to be someone, something. It was supposed to be different, just... anything but this. And yet here he was. Here he stood, in a small room with an overflowing concoction that was supposed to change the course of his life, to heal him, bring him back to his prime. His memories flashed to when he was just older than a hatchling as his claws wrapped around empty glass potion bottles; his eyes widened and screams of the dragons he had killed, murdered in cold blood, echoed in his ears. Soldiers from another battle. Martyrs of a different war. A war that he had lost, a life that he couldn't go back to. His hand moved over the weapon and grabbed small, stout leaves. He dropped three of them into the brew and almost immediately, the liquid calmed, turning from a tumultuous froth to a calm pond of murky blue essence. A sneer broke out on his lips, his teeth grating as his mind wandered once more. He was supposed to rule this foul land. He was supposed to be higher than the deities themselves. He was supposed to be a god. And now, he was a dragon hiding from the world in a wet cave with a clan that could barely sustain themselves. How pathetic was that? A wing draped across his shoulder, pink and glimmering. Lloryien peered out from Aellyn's peripherals and, like a spell had been cast on him, his muscles relaxed as they stared into each other's eyes. With a soft smile and a velvet kiss on the ridgeback's nose, Lloryien circled the potion and gave it a sniff, asking what it was for. Aellyn replied with some vague answer; a white lie. The imperial he cared for had no place in the world he had created. No one in this clan did; no matter how much he resented being here, he could only be grateful to the dragons that had taken him in at his lowest, and especially for Lloryien for seeing something in him he had never seen before. It was a call for dinner. Of course it was. He had been in this room for gods knew how long, and he had lost track of time. With a swipe of his tail to hide the artifacts of war he kept with him, he followed his lover out the door, promising himself that when he got what he wanted and he ruled the entirety of Sornieth, the dragons that had helped him would be spared and given a place in his high court. |
