Biography

N E E M I A S
Post-Dragon

"I'm not retiring." Tonka said, flicking his tail irritably.
"We're not going to make you retire," Honeycomb sighed, rolling her eyes, "But one day you will retire and we'll need another delivery dragon."
"I'm not retiring." He huffed again, he was getting fed up of repeating himself.

Honeycomb threw her claws in the air and turned to Marsh on the other side of the look out who was gearing off for her morning flight. Her eyes pleaded to her to intervene. Marsh sat by Honey's side and came to her rescue.

"C'mon old chap, it'll take a weight of your shoulders and those achey wings."
"My wings are fine, Marsh."
"No one's saying you're going to be carted off to the mausoleum tomorrow, but an assistant can't be that bad?"
"I didn't say they would be bad." Tonka stretched out the crick in his wings and yawned, "I just don't want one."

"Too bad. I've already told him he could accompany you on a morning flight to see what it's like." Honey said, "He's such a dear little thing, so excited and enthusiastic. You should see him in the air!"
"Barely a fledgling." He snorted.
"Hey, you were a great flier right out the gate, mate." Marsh said, pawing him on the chest, "And I bet it gets lonely out there each morning. He sounds like he's a cheerful little guy."
"It's peaceful alone." He said, hauling his mail bags over his shoulder, "And he's late, if he's not here soon I'll leave without him."

Honey didn't have time to protest against his harsh words when they all spotted something whirling and whooping out in the sunrise. A dragon was twisting gleefully in a figure of eight, slipping in and out of the clouds effortlessly. With a whistle of wind he perched at the very edge of the lookout. He was face to face with Tonka.

"Hello! Hi! I mean-- greetings! I'm here to try out for the apprenticeship! I'm Neem and you must be Tonka, I mean you know who you are, but I'm Neem and oh dear I've already said that..." He trailed off, adjusting his wide brimmed hat and saddle-bags nervously.

He offered a claw to Tonka who stared at it before turning to give a withering look to his sister.
"Let's get going." He sighed, "We're headed due North on my usual route, then we're onto the Gladveins outpost to hand over packages and bring back herbal deliveries. You know how to navigate in the sky?"
"Uhh, yes. I mean, yes! Of course!" He said beaming.
"...Just follow me." Tonka leapt over the edge of the Lookout and onto a strong tailwind.

He felt the rookie fly after him, dipping and playing in the current. He grumbled, he probably thought he was going too slow. He beat down his wings to ripple the current and saw the Coatl wobble slightly on the wing out the corner of his eye. He smiled to himself, he still had it, he thought smugly.

Turns out, the young'n wasn't much of a talker on the wing. Much to his relief, they had a lot of empty plains to cover before they would land. It was a balmy day and the golden grasses rippled and nodded in the wake of their flight.

Then he spotted it, the first stop, the old Farm House. Tonka hovered in deep gusty wing beats and Neem circled him in curiosity. He pointed down and they made a soft spiralling descent.

"Nice work. Good control." Tonka said with a grunt, "I'll take the letter to Morj. Find North-East."

Tonka sauntered up to a rickety old cabin and rapped on the splintered door that squeaked in the draught. Old Morj was a skinny little pearlcatcher with a grey mane, Tonka handed her a letter from a relative in the clan.

"Thank you, Tonka. I always get up early for your visits." She smiled, "Though I see you've brought a friend, would you both like to come in for breakfast?"
He chuckled, every morning she would invite him in and every morning he would decline as he was en route. Yet before he could say no thank you she interrupted.

"My he's full of energy this one. Son? Nephew? Baby-sitting are we?"

Tonka spun around to see his applicant apprentice doing barrell rolls and dives close to the ground, humming to himself.

"Uh, no, Morj he's uhh... excuse me, I best be on the way."
Morj nodded and waved him out as Tonka went over to watch Neem in the air.

"Get down. You'll tire yourself out." Tonka snorted, "You're supposed to be finding North-East."
"Oh, sorry Mr. Tonka-- Master Tonka? Well, uh, I sorted that out and got a little bored. North-East is that way, there over the tree line." Neem landed and folded his wings tightly to his back, he curled his tail besides him like a sad puppy. He was correct of course.
"...Good job." He said, "Let's be off."

They got into a rhythm eventually, flying and stopping. Neem couldn't be trusted to deliver parcels without wittering on like a budgie but everyone seemed charmed by him. Tonka wanted desperately not to like him either. But he had to admit, he was a bright and cheerful little chap when he wasn't showing off in the air.

Soon they reached the coast; Neem was wide-eyed over the sea glimmer and endless blue. Tonka remembered when he was first entrusted to take the post all the way out to the Nature Territory. No one helped him along, he had to learn as he went. The clan depending on him not getting lost, distracted or stopping to smell the sea breeze. He took a deep breath. It was fresh, salty and with a hint of spring green as the Glade Veins came into view.

They landed and hauled the last of the bags over to the Delta Outpost. Neem shook the hand of every leaf-bedecked dragon who were very amused by his eagerness. He recalled meeting them all for the first time, seeing all the nature dragons in their strange foliage shawls and flower crowns. Sniffing their heady perfume and seeing their towering trees. Neem was trying his best to absorb it all at once. The green-eyed dragons teased Tonka about retiring and he flicked his tail at them and walked away without a word.

"Ready to head back?" Neem asked, readjusting that ridiculous hat of his. His wing were already out stretched and flapping.
Tonka shook his mane out and let out a long sigh, "I need to rest. Let's get some food and head back..."

Neem paused and started to squirrel about his saddle bags, looking as if he had a ferret in his pockets he was trying to let escape. He awkwardly twisted and scrabbled until he took out two curious looking brown bakes. Tonka blinked at them.

"Your sister Miss Honey said you loved nuts and chocolate and bananas so I tried to bake them all into these. They were supposed to be muffins, they got a bit squashed." He said, handing them over, "I have a flask of black tea, too. I got it from Miss Liette before we set off. Hope its okay."
"Its... great." He said, putting a paw to his shoulder and wolfing down the squashed but very delicious muffin, "I'll have to bring you out every morning if I get treated like this."
"Oh yes, please sir! I'll bring you two flasks and two trays of muffins next time and I won't crush them in my saddle bags next time, promise!!"

Tonka wheezed a laugh, "No need, no need. Just... who I am kidding? You've done good today. I am not too proud to admit it was a lot easier with you around. You're capable."
Neem wagged his tail, his eyes brimming with joyous tears, "Thank you... All I've wanted to do is deliver the post ever since I saw you go out each morning from my chamber. I'll do you proud, Mr. Tonka."
He smiled back before chugging some tea, "Don't thank me yet. This is just the morning shift, next we're headed back--"
"Down South-West! To Churnscar Wharf, right?"
Tonka nodded and finished his tea, stretching out his wings, "Right."
