shirane ueda.
↠ daimyo of sekaino.

"I only have five minutes," he says, although not dismissively, "I must meet with the factory union later after all. Speak swiftly and I will listen." He folds his arms, sliding his hands into his sleeves, and stares with a very intense expression. His long ears flick to and fro, and it is clear that the gears of his mind are turning at a rapid pace. When she is done, his eyes have a slight glow to them, and his expression splits into a shark-like grin. "I agree," he says, to her surprise, "We will implement that tomorrow. Are you surprised? I will never turn down anything that will advance us, quicken us, or improve us. Thank you for your contribution."

Shirane Ueda should never have been Daimyo- and Shirane Ueda was always going to be Daimyo. That paradox is at the crux of his being, and perhaps where the controversy of his reign comes from. Although he was born to the Ueda clan, one of the two most prestigious clans of Sekaino, his home province, he was born very low down on their hierarchy- a cousin of a cousin of a cousin. His father left his mother when he was born, and his mother was far too busy being a seamstress to really care for him. He didn't mind that, being a happy and helpful child until he was six. He went to bed one day, and he had a dream.

In the dream, he was pulled from his body and lifted into the sky, settling down at the edge of a cliff as he watched the sun turn red, then black as an eclipse occurs. The red light began to bleed onto the land, wiping out everything. And then he woke up.

He had the dream the next night, and the next, and the next. No amount of spiritual cleansing stopped it. Eventually, he learnt to stop talking about it, but every night he had that same dream. He knew that it wasn't just a dream, not a nightmare, not an omen, but a prophecy. Perhaps not a literal one, but for some reason the gods decided to warn him that disaster would strike in his lifetime- and so, he went to work.

It wasn't easy. Shirane had no mobility to really draw on, being shunned by the higher status Ueda, and despite his determination and charisma he couldn't manoeuvre himself into a more advantageous position to even begin to try and work out what to do to save his home. He ended up working as a court painter, going to and fro from the nobles houses drawing up their portraits. It was something he very much enjoyed, of course, but it also gave him the ability to eavesdrop. He began to compile secrets, make friends in the right places, all the while the dream would nip at his heels every time he slept. When the War of Spirits broke out, Shirane found himself on the front lines, leading the fight to protect Sekaino from horseback. Whilst he wasn't a particularly incredible warrior, he was very good at tactics. Although he did gain some notoriety being a talented general, when the war was over the Ueda's position was even worse. They had been usurped by the Wen clan, replaced as leaders and advisors and sent into decline. Still Shirane continued his work, going back to painting and listening and creating ties to everyone he could.

Many years later, when he was working in Himikoro, in the Tenkubashi palace, the news reached him. The leaders of Sekaino, his family's old enemies, the Wen clan, had been killed to a man. It only took a few days for his own family to confess to the crime. It was horrific- the deaths of an entire clan, and all of those who they were housing in their palace. Even worse, it seemed to be an assassination attempt on Moyasukami Tenkubashi, the prince and darling of Kasaiwari. He had left only a day before, narrowly missing his own untimely death. It came out that after being deposed from the position as leaders and advisors in the wake of the War of Spirits, those who remained had banded together in a final act of vengeance, taking down their enemies with them.

Enraged by the events, Empress Kaede put the entire Ueda clan to death. Everyone except for Shirane, as he was the only one they could prove had nothing to do with it. He had no contact with his family, and during his stay in the Tenkubashi palace he had been closely watched. With no members of the Wen or Ueda clans left except for him, he went from no one to Daimyo of Sekaino. This was not without it's own controversy as the rest of the nobles blew up- he was no one, and likely also complicit in the Ueda's crimes. It didn't matter though, and Shirane rose to Daimyo amid that storm of contention.

This was his chance. This was what he had been waiting for. Those deaths, those sacrifices, had put him in the exact position he needed to be in. He went to work immediately with intensity unmatched. He had a plan and by the gods he was going to do it as fast as possible, no matter what got in the way. He ordered huge swathes of jungle to be cut down to clear space, renovating the city centre and reinforcing all the buildings, modernising what already existed and creating more and more. He joined forces with another visionary, Jinjie, and replaced the few tiny factories that did exist with sprawling complexes fuelled by lava redirected from the local volcanoes by the Yu-Asu, the Tenshi branch of Sekaino. This allowed for Sekaino to be rapidly industrialised, improving the quality of goods and services massively at the expense of the city being covered in smog and the people's lives being dominated by industry. The reduction of the jungle also had the double benefit and detriment of reducing the size of the local yokai's territory, making them more exposed but also more violent due to being backed into a corner.

He absolutely refuses to slow down his march towards progress, desperate to make sure the land that is so beloved by him won't sink under the shadow of the disaster that looms in the distance. Whilst his intentions are selfless, his methods are ruthless. He doesn't care how many people it takes to get to the point where Sekaino can really, truly defend itself from any potential threat. He will work himself and everyone around him to the bone to do it. He will do and take whatever he wishes- the most egregious of which might be kidnapping Li-ling Wen. During a business visit to Sanariku, the seashore province, he met Li-ling Wen. She had survived the massacre of her family and was working in a teashop favoured by Nagisa Kawagishi, the Daimyo of Sanariku. Shirane fell in love the moment he laid eyes on her, despite the fact she was actively attempting to stab him and push him out of her shop, yelling at him for being a monster. It was his attitude of achieving whatever he feels is necessary that meant he dug out an absolutely ancient rule that allowed him to 're-settle' her at his province, something Nagisa had no way of disputing no matter how furious it made him.

Shirane is a divisive man wherever he goes. Some see him as a saviour and revolutionary who cuts through dusty old customs, a man with intense energy and charisma, a man who can get anything done no matter how hard. Others see him as a monster who simply stamps on those in his way, a man unfit for power who cares nothing for the people he claims to serve and disrupts the lives of all those around him. Both of those are very much true, depending on how you look at it. He claims to care nothing for his own reputation, but sometimes he can find himself feeling very alone in the world, saddled with a destiny no one can understand or even believe.
