it had started with the sea, as many things had.

bloated rot washed up on the shore, each one more decayed than the last. even as the scientists tried their best to understand, it only became worse.

until eventually, it was no longer limited to the sea.

they fell dead on the ground, flesh sloughing off bone, nauseatingly rancid and already rotting even when they took their last breath mere moments ago.

she wondered, sometimes, what the point of it all was. if it was worth it. in her empty home with its pristine walls, the same bleached bone-white as her first memory.

but it had to be. she couldn't accept any other answer. the ghost still haunted her, with its lingering caresses and gentle eyes and honeyed words. in her empty chest where her heart no longer beat. she had given it away forever ago, and had never been able to take it back.
