Prior to joining Gestalt, Mus was a researcher living in the Tourmaline Archives. The researchers in his wing of the Archive focused on developing or streamlining the production of genes inspired by other animals. Through their research, the magic involved to create gene scrolls was simplified, leading to more consistent results and lower production costs. Of course, with the immense demand experienced for novel genes in the marketplace, Mus and his fellow scientists were often under immense pressure to streamline processes quickly after a gene became known to the population of Sornieth.

Under one such day of immense pressure to perfect the process of enchanting Piebald scrolls, the Mirror held up a stack of parchment sheets triumphantly. He had just produced six scrolls for the gene, without a single sheet burning or degrading as he put the spell to paper; a significantly better yield than the original method, which resulted in only 20-30% of the scrolls surviving production. Now was the time to test them. He glanced to the cage on his desk with six brown rats within it, counting them twice. Mus wasn't used to working with this strain of rats, as usually, the Archives worked with a line of albino rats. But of course, a piebald pattern would not be clearly visible on such an animal, and thus, the brown rats were ordered just for Mus and his work.

Six rats, and he needed to prove himself with six scrolls for his work to be accepted. The lack of extra rats did not concern Mus; his lab was well-stocked with scrolls to revert a gene to basic should a scroll produce lackluster results and further testing be needed, and the Mirror was familiar with the spell to produce more of the basic scrolls should he run out. Grabbing the first rat from the cage, he released the magic of the scroll and watched. The solid brown rat developed white across most of his body, his original color remaining only in patches. The next rat was tested, with the same results emerging. Mus sighed in relief, yearning for the nap he would finally be able to take when his work was done. Another three rats, and another three successes.

But then, he couldn't find the sixth rat. It must have escaped when he wasn't looking, and after tearing apart his lab, Mus was at his wit's end. He needed six successes in order to have his work accepted, and his deadline was looming closer. Thrashing his pink tail in frustration, the Mirror looked down at his iridescent scales. He had saved so many weeks worth of his wages to afford gem genes of his own. And with a deep breath, the Mirror opened his final piebald scroll.

Just as the final brown rat, fat from stealing the researcher's lunch stowed on his desk, poked his head out of the brown paper bag.

--

After his initial frustration with the situation, and of course after making another scroll just for the final rat, Mus used it as a way to brag about his dedication to his work. When he eventually retired from working in the Archives, he continued to carry his new nickname, 06, as well as his six piebald rats. At Gestalt, he works with the Collectors, aiding with transmutation efforts.
