For the longest time, Evangelos was nobody. He was nothing. He went unnoticed every day and by anyone. Dragons who were dirt in the eyes of society looked down on him. It was because his nickname was the Undertaker. His father had been a man of war, a fierce general and the boon of the gods. Tides would turn in his favour, battles would be won by his blade, and the enemy ran scurrying away when he stepped on the field. Evangelos was hoped to be just like his father: strong, righteous, guided by the light. This wasn't the case. While his father fought bravely, Evangelos found he couldn't. War wasn't for him. Killing wasn't for him. He couldn't - no, he wouldn't - do it. His father was furious and tasked him with a job no dragon wanted to do. Evangelos was told to count and tend to the dead. It was an easy job and, eventually, his stomach was able to handle it without the nausea. He developed a sort of...premonition ability. He was soon able to tell when someone was going to die. It started out as hunches, not always right and sometimes only partially right, but then they became more correct. Dragons came to realize that if Evangelos showed up somewhere, someone there was destined to die. They avoided him, loathed him, and wished him dead. No one cared that it wasn't Evangelos killing them; he was a mark on their lives and they wanted nothing to do with him. His father, however, saw a use in this. With Evangelos, they could see if they were going to win wars. He became a deciding factor. Who were their true allies and who were only feigning it? What battles would result in the most causalities? Would the deaths be worth it? It was a burden, but Evangelos had known that burden from a very young age. He would never fight in a war, but he would decide them. It's uncertain how his whole clan was wiped out. Except for Evangelos. They were all ruined, taken away to the gods, and Evangelos was the only one left alive. He spoke little of what happened, deathly silent even when he met the Imperial Aelius, the leader of the Frozen-Sea Clan, as he was forging their strengths. Aelius saw Evangelos as one of those strengths, but knew a broken dragon when he saw one. He was slow on Evangelos; careful. Aelius showed him what a caring clan felt like, where no one judged another. For Evangelos, it was all too easy to accept Aelius' offer into the clan and receive the title "Speaker of War" as one of Aelius' council members. It was the same job as he had before, but it was different. It felt different. It felt kinder. | blankblank |
