Andromeda

Fall, night, fall, and soothe our eyes,
But smother not the day, which has strengthened us.

Andromeda thrives on mystery, perhaps because she’s always lived amidst it. She comes from a large family, but little is known of her history. She seems to prefer it that way. Certainly she’s very adept at changing the subject whenever the matter comes up.

She’s a skilled astronomer – and an astrologer, too – who studies the stars by night and shares what she’s gleaned from them by day. While she’s so secretive about objects, she’s generous with the information and insights she learns from the dance of the wheeling night. She’ll also invite others to join her in watching the skies, loaning them the little telescope she constantly keeps in a cloak-pocket.

Andromeda makes regular reports to the lair’s Council of what wisdom she’s found in the stars, and her neighbors have learned to respect her advice greatly – and not to ask when she’s curiously silent on a particular topic. There’s absolutely no point in pressing her.

On cloudy nights when the stars are not visible from Sornieth’s surface, Andromeda takes on a kind of mania. It’s as though she’s trying to sparkle brightly enough to make up for their absence. At these times she’ll wake a companion and lead them into the gloom, her great violet form twining through the darkness and her voice glinting softly in the ear as she whispers exciting hints of what they may find enclosed by the protective shroud of the night.

Andromeda has a mate, Lukarr, but they keep separate dwellings. He can’t bear to have things hidden from him, for one thing, and likes to keep his space aseptically clean and spacious, while Andromeda prefers a cozy, eclectic lair with beautiful things tucked into boxes and hidden under cushions. There was also a fearsome argument once over a portrait he did of her. Andromeda posed for him, but then she took the drawing and slipped it away.

Their argument is the occasional subject of speculation in the lair to this day, but as usual, Andromeda isn’t telling anyone what happened. She did once remark, though, that Lukarr sometimes sees more than any dragon ought to see. She claims the stars agree with her. No one else is inclined to question that.
