Tranquil breezes accented the soft ridges of the Oasis's vivid sandstone market, carrying the enticing scents of fried delights and joyous chatter towards the shale mercenary. Rum bottles clinked, a constant rhythm in drunken harmony with the popping of hot oil from food stalls sprawled throughout the street. A faint cacophony of lyres and bards could be heard in the distance.

The sights were a stark contrast from the ruined dunes of the Outskirts, defined by tarnished claws of bandits and bramble. Kiran was a product of that disarray, their war-scarred shawl directly clashing with the vibrant silks of the townsfolk as they padded past the booths. It had been a bleak existence there. Abandoned as a hatchling, he scavenged the corpses of those fallen to the dunes for rations, later plucking a worn cutlass from a lifeless hand, the body marred by the insistent pecks of vultures. Lifting a limp wing of another corpse, he discovered Phaeton. A Coatl hatchling barely his size, they grew to be brothers in arms, aligned by a shared comradery in their circumstances. Though Phaeton later outgrew the harsh lifestyle, Kiran could not pull away. Becoming a fang for the highest bidder, many of the desert's most wanted learned to fear the unyielding gaze of his diamond eyes, piercing through the dusty gales of the rugged terrain he had grown accustomed to.

Yet these dragons of paradise here met his gaze with no such contempt, no desperate nor malign attempt at clawing their way to survive. These were free creatures: free to daydream, free to reminisce.

Kiran turned his head away towards the bounty board, a silent reminder. There lies no solace for claws bathed in blood.
